Calvin d. Hope 26-30, 32-30, 30-25, 30-25
HOLLAND -- For Calvin to continue its nine-game winning streak and remain
undefeated in the MIAA conference meant a breaking of a Hope record. Since it
opened last winter for basketball season, the DeVos Fieldhouse has not seen a
loss from any Hope team. Calvin put an end to that record tonight, defeating
Hope (16-7, 9-2 MIAA) in a thrilling four-game match, 26-30, 32-30 30-25,
30-25. With the win, Calvin (19-1, 12-0 MIAA) takes a big step towards
clinching the top seed position in the upcoming MIAA Tournament.
In game one, Hope started off scoring and stayed two steps ahead of Calvin,
finding holes in the Knights defense and preventing Calvin offensive attacks.
Though Calvin was within one at with Hope leading 14-13, the Dutch pulled away
to a 28-23 lead. Calvin stayed alive with three kilss before hope to the game
30-26. Hope had the edge on defense, not allowing Calvin to show its usual
offensive strength.
Game two started off with an early Calvin 7-1 lead which included three kills
from senior Katy Luimes (Caledonia, ON/Hamilton District Christian) that caught
Hope off guard. A tip from senior Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA/Unity
Christian) gave Calvin an impressive 8-1 margin before Hope rallied to narrow
the Calvin lead to 9-4. Vogel and Luimes dished out kills to make the score
11-4 in Calvin's favor. Junior Molly Krikke (Greenwich, OH/South Central) then
had two consecutive kills to keep Calvin ahead with a seven-point lead, 14-7.
Hope then threatened with a four-point run to come with in three, 14-11. Though
Calvin progressed to lead 20-13, Hope went on a 9-3 run to come within one of
the Knights, 23-22, as Calvin let up on defense. Hope again threatened at 25-24
and 26-25, going on to tie the game at 26 with a service ace and again at
27-27. Hope matched Calvin point-for-point, tying the score at 30-30 with a
kill. A Krikke kill and a Hope attack attempt that hit out-of-bounds gave the
game over to Calvin, 32-30.
Though Calvin had the first points of game three, Hope took a 6-3 lead and
pulled away to 10-6 on Calvin service errors. With Hope unforced errors and a
kill from senior Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH/Stow Munroe Falls), Calvin tied the
game at 12-12. A quick from Krikke gave Calvin a 14-13, Hope answering with a
kill to tie again. Two long volleys that included extraordinary efforts on both
sides ended in Calvin's favor, the Knights taking a 17-14 lead which was soon
extended to 19-15. As the Flying Dutch couldn't handle Calvin's offensives, the
Knights snuck away with a 23-16 margin. Hope challenged offensively while
playing flawless defense to make the score 24-21. At the net, Krikke had two
consecutive kills as Calvin took a 27-21 lead. After a Hope effort, Krikke
tacked up another killa nd Vogel followed suit, game point 29-23. After
allowing two points, Calvin took the match with a Krikke tip.
Game four was the game of ties, with the game tied at points 3,4,5,6,7,9,10,
and again at 13. Calvin then broke away to lead 19-13 through a series of
blocks. Hope ate away at Calvin's six-point margin, coming within two at 21-19
by way of a 6-2 scoring run. Hope then tied the game at 21 and took a
subsequent 22-21 lead. Krikke then caught the Hope defense looking twice to
re-establish Calvin's lead at 23-22. Unreleting, Hope regained the lead 24-23.
Kalb retaliated with a kill and Calvin battled back to a 28-24 advantage.
Calvin took the game and the match on an unforced Hope error, 30-25.
Head Coach Amber Warners was "very proud of them coming out in this atmosphere
and playing point-for-point, not letting game one get them down. We are pretty
consistent overall this year, no matter who we play. Hope played exceptional
defense, but we out-matched them at the net with blocks in games two, three,
and four."
Leading Calvin were Krikke with 20 kills and four blocks, Kalbe with 14 kills
and 17 digs, Vogel with nine kills and four blocks, and Luimes with nine kills
and a team-high eight blocks. Junior Katie Zondervan (Lakewood, CA/Valley
Christian) had 44 assists and 21 digs in the match. Sophomore Lauren DeGroot
(Tulare, CA/Central Valley Chrstian) led the defense with 31 digs, and freshman
Kelsey Sears (Traverse City/Traverse City West) added 13 digs.

and then will head to Albion on Tuesday, October 24th.
