CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 30TH 2006
WOMEN’S SOCCER
ANGOLA INDIANA- The Calvin women’s soccer team continued their undefeated season Saturday by thoroughly beating the Thunder of Tri-State University 7-0. The win improves Calvin’s record to 11-0 overall and 3-0 in the MIAA while the Thunder remained winless for the season (0-9, 0-3). Dating back to last season, Calvin has a 16 game unbeaten streak.
Calvin scored four times in the first half of play. Senior Laura Rooks (Holland, MI) scored an unassisted goal just into the 16th minute of play, her first goal of the season. Another senior, Leah Scholten (Hudsonville, MI) notched her first goal of the season in the 28th minute off a pass from sophomore Michelle Koele (Denver, CO). Koele took over the show after that, putting in a corner kick in the 39th minute and then converting an unassisted goal eight seconds later for her fifth and sixth goals of the season. With the two-goals and one assist, Koele moved up to nine points for the season.
Freshman goalkeeper Alyssa Bergsma (Walker, MI), per usual, played the first half and did not face a shot on goal. Bergsma’s goals-against average this season is at a very low .46 goals as she has allowed only three goals all season.
In the second half, freshman Natalie Veurink (Spring Lake, MI) buried a corner kick from sophomore Jessica Vegter (Hudsonville, MI) for her third goal of the season in the 50th minute. Rooks scored again for Calvin with an unassisted goal in the 53rd minute for her second of the game and season. Calvin finished the scoring when leading scorer, senior Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo, MI), scored unassisted in the 90th minute. For Weesies, it was her team leading 10th goal, giving her a team high total of 27 points on the season.
Freshman goalkeeper Kayla Sulzer (St, Charles, MO) started the second half in goal and gave way to freshman Lynae Steketee (Holland, MI) mid-way through the half. Neither player faced a shot from the Thunder.
Calvin will have a week off to prepare for rival Hope College next Saturday, October 7th. That game will be in Holland and is scheduled to start at 12:00pm.
