CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2006
WOMEN’S SOCCER
(Written by Annalise Venhuizen ’08)
GRAND RAPIDS * The Knights hosted conference opponent Albion this evening knowing the competition would be tough, as the Britons (8-3-0, 1-1-0 MIAA) hold the second-best overall record in the league. Play was even for the majority of the game until Calvin (10-0-0, 2-0-0 MIAA) scored two goals in the last 16:00 to remain undefeated on the season.
The Knights are currently ranked 6th on the D3kicks.com Top 25 Poll and 7th on the NSCAA Division III Top-25 Poll, the highest ranking the team has received since being ranked seventh on the latter in 1997.
Calvin out-shot Albion in the first half 8-1 in overall shots and 3-0 in shots-on-goal. Freshman Alyssa Bergsma (Walker/Calvin Christian) played keeper for the Knights in the first half, but saw no real offensive threats. Calvin again surpassed Albion in the second half by a 9-3 shot margin, five of Calvin’s shots being on goal.
Goal number one for Calvin came in the 74th minute of play, as senior Jill Capel (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) drew the defense on the left side of the net and sent a nice pass to freshman Natalie Veurink (Spring Lake/Western Michigan Christian), who had a nice open look from the center of the box. Veurink drove a hard kick to the back of the net to give Calvin the 1-0 advantage.
Albion then had its only shot-on-goal of the evening with 10:30 left in regulation time as Allison Oatley had an open angle from the left side of the net. Freshman goal keeper Kayla Sulzer (St. Charles, MO/Whitfield), who took over goal duties for the second half, prevented the Briton rebuttal with a clutch save, cutting off the shot near the goal post.
To seal the Calvin victory, Capel, who had seven shots in the contest, came up with a goal of her own in the 84th minute, faking her way around a defender to see an open shot from the left side. Capel’s unassisted goal was her ninth goal of the season.
The Knights pick up conference play again this weekend as they travel to Tri-State Saturday for a 12:00 noon game.
