(Editor’s Note: Fifth in a Series of Seven Fall Sports Previews)
Women's Golf 2006 Preview
With only one returning letterwinner, the Calvin women’s golf team will be in a rebuilding mode this fall. Nevertheless, head coach Jerry Bergsma is optimistic.
Bergsma brings in three promising freshmen along with a handful of sophomores playing in their first year of collegiate golf. They will join sophomore Juanita Gibson (Detroit/Detroit Renaissance HS) – the lone returning letterwinner.
Incoming freshmen include Tessa Mulder (Haslett/Haslett HS), Kelly Visser (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Julienne Louters (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS).
Bergsma lists sophomore Jessica Bruggink (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) to contribute in her first year of collegiate golf.
“We have a lot of unknowns and yet I’m cautiously optimistic,” said Bergsma. “Our incoming players are very enthusiastic and they have some talent. If we remain enthusiastic, I think our team will definitely improve.”
Calvin will open its season on September 6 when its hosts a head-to-head competition against Aquinas at the Thornapple Pointe Golf Club. The Knights will also compete at an invitational hosted by Aquinas on September 27. In addition, Calvin will again host the Calvin-Hope Fall Invitational with this year’s date set for October 5 at the Thornapple Point Golf Club. The MIAA season will again consist of three jamborees and a 36-hole two-day tournament. Calvin will serve as host of the October 13 and 14 tournament which will again be held at the Bedford Valley Country Club.
The 2006 MIAA champion will also receive an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament next spring. This is the first year that the league has received an automatic bid.
