Jim Deters Update;
Nate Meckes Competes at U.S. Track and Field Nationals
DETERS SNAPS THREE-GAME LOSING SKID
SALISBURY, MD - Lake County Captains starter Jim Deters picked up his first
minor league victory since June 8 and snapped a three-game losing skid in the
process with a 7-3 victory over the Delmarva Shorebirds over the weekend. A
2005 graduate of Calvin, Deters (5-6) went five innings and allowed just three
hits and one unearned run. He also struck out two batters and walked just one.
In a 4-1 loss to the Lakewood BlueClaws on June 26, Deters gave up only two
earned runs in 5.2 innings of work but suffered the pitching defeat. Deters was
also tagged with a defeat in a 10-2 loss to the BlueClaws on June 18 despite
giving up only three earned runs in six innings of work. Deters also took the
loss in a 9-3 defeat to the Lexington Legends on June 13, giving up only two
earned runs in 4.2 innings of work.
A native of Portage and a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School, Deters
did gain a win against the Legends on June 8 in a 16-1 victory by the Captains.
Deters struck out three and walked one in 5.2 inning of work. Deters missed
pitching head-to-head against future Hall of Famer Roger Clemens by two days as
Clemens went three innings against the Captains on June 6 while tuning up for
his return to the Houston Astros.
Deters currently leads the Captains in innings pitched (96.0) and strikeouts
(68). He has allowed just 15 walks this season and carries a season earned run
average of 3.75.
The Lake County Captains are a Class A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians and

NATE MECKES 16th IN DISCUS AT U.S. TRACK AND FIELD NATIONALS
After receiving a late-entry into the U.S. Track and Field National meet in
the discus last week, recent Calvin College graduate Nate Meckes proceeded to
finish 16th in a field of 19 competitors in the event with a throw of 177-2.
A native of Bay City and a graduate of Westland Lutheran High School, Meckes
was making his second straight appearance at the national meet. Meckes also
placed 16th in the discus at the 2005 U.S. Track and Field Championships,
recording a mark of 168-9.
The winning discus throw at the 2006 national meet was 211-8 by Nick Waltz.
Meckes was one of two former Division III athletes competing in the discus as
recent Williams (MA) graduate Dan Austin took fourth with a throw of 198-9.
