CALVIN TEAMS RECEIVE MIAA TEAM GPA AWARD
Six Calvin College athletics teams have received the MIAA Team GPA Award. The
award, presented by the Faculty Athletic
Representatives of the MIAA member colleges recognizes conference athletic
teams who achieved a 3.3 or better grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the
entire 2005-06 academic year. Calvin teams that earned the award for the
2005-06 academic year include the men's and women's tennis teams, the women's
cross country team, the women's track and field team, the women's
basketball team and the women's softball team.
This is the eighth year the award has been presented.
Calvin's women's tennis team, its women's cross country team and its
men's tennis team hold down the top three spots among the 45 league teams
honored by the MIAA.
Led by head coach Jerry Bergsma, the Calvin women's tennis team led all
schools with a cumulative team grade point average of 3.63. Led by head coach
Nancy Meyer, the women's cross country team was second with a 3.59 grade
point average while the men's tennis team led by John Ross was third with a
3.58 grade point average.
The Calvin women's cross country team has now earned the MIAA Team GPA Award
eight consecutive years, one of four remaining teams in the MIAA to have done
so. The women's tennis team is receiving the award for the third straight
year while the men's tennis team is being so honored for the second straight
year.
Ross also served as head coach of the Calvin women's basketball team which
pulled in a 3.46 grade point average and is receiving the honor for the first
time. The women's basketball team finished 15th on the MIAA list
The Calvin women's track and field also earned the award for the sixth
straight year as it posted a team GPA of 3.48 to rank 14th on the MIAA list.
The Calvin women's track and field team was led this year by head coach Jong-Il
Kim.
Led by head coach Deb Bakker, the women's softball team compiled a 3.40
grade point average to rank 29th on the list of MIAA teams
MIAA ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL ANNOUNCED
The 2005-06 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Academic
Honor Roll has been announced by Commissioner David Neilson and 100 Calvin
scholar-athletes have been named to the list.
The honor roll recognizes scholar-athletes who achieve a minimum 3.5
grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2004-05 academic year. A
student needed to have won a varsity letter in a sport to be eligible.
The MIAA Academic Honor Roll program was initiated in 1990 to recognize
students at MIAA member colleges who excel both in athletics and in the
classroom. This year's Honor Roll includes 47 students who achieved the
distinction four consecutive years. Of the 47 students, 10 were from Calvin.
The 1 Calvin scholar-athletes named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for a
fourth straight year were seniors Noel Berghuis (Hudsonville, Mich./ soccer),
Kim Bosscher (Grandville, Mich./Tennis), Justin Grasmeyer (Norwalk, CA/track
and field), Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH/volleyball and track & field),
Harrison Jorritsma (Beamsville, ON/cross country and track & field), Camille
Medema (Grand Rapids, Mich./cross country and track & field), Laura Miersma
(Holland, Mich./swimming & diving), Missy Smith (Ada, Mich/track and field),
Magaret Tassaro (Carnegie, PA/golf) and Kim Vanderzee (Shoreline, Wash./track &
field).
