CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR JUNE 22, 2006
CALVIN FINISHES 9TH IN FINAL SPORTS ACADEMY DIRECTOR'S CUP STANDINGS
GRAND RAPIDS -- For the 11th consecutive year, Calvin has posted a top 25
finish in the final NCAA III U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings, and
now is one of only eight schools in the country to finish in the top 25 every
year that the competition has been held at the NCAA III level.
Joining Calvin in that elite group are Williams, Mass., the College of New
Jersey, Amherst, Mass., Middlebury, Wisconsin-LaCrosse, the State University of
New York at Cortland and Emory, Ga.
Calvin finished ninth in the nation in Division III in 2005-2006 with a total
of 561.25 points. MIAA rival Hope College was 12th in this year's standings
with 487.5 points. Williams College, Mass., defended its title as the best
athletics program in the nation in Division III by winning its 10th U.S. Sports
Academy Directors' Cup with 920.5 points.
This year's ninth-place finish also marks the fourth time that Calvin has
finished in the top 10 in the final standings. The school's athletic teams
were sixth overall last year, sixth in 1999-2000 and seventh in 1998-99.
The Cup is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate
Directors of Athletics (NACDA), United States Sports Academy and USA TODAY to
the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country, and is based on
points earned by teams that compete in NCAA Championship events.
For Division III points are awarded based on finish in championship
competition in up to 18 sports -- nine for men and nine for women. Each
national champion receives 100 points with a national runner-up finish worth 90
points. Third place is worth 80 points and fourth place finishes count for 75
points with a sliding point scale continuing on down by order of finish.
In other divisions Grand Valley State was the runaway winner in the Division
II ranks, making it three-in-a-row for the Lakers, and Stanford won its 12th
straight Directors' Cup crown at the NCAA Division I level. Azusa Pacific was
the NAIA winner for 2006.
Calvin picked up 130.5 points during the spring sports season as its women's
track and field took fifth at the NCAA III Championships, while its men's track
and field team took 18th. The finish by the Calvin women was worth 75 points
in the Director's Cup standings while the men's finish was worth 55.5
points.
Combined, 10 of Calvin's 17 sports teams during the 2005-06 academic year
scored Directors' Cup points.
After the fall sports season Calvin was third in the team standings with a
total of 283 points. Calvin was able to build its point total on the
performance of its men's and women's cross country teams, its women's
volleyball team and its men's and women's soccer teams at the NCAA III
Championships this past November. The men's cross country team picked up 90
points with a second place national finish, while the women's cross country
team earned 40 points with a 17th place finish. In addition, the men's soccer
team and women's volleyball teams earned 64 points each with placements in the
sectional round of their national tournaments while the women's soccer team
added 25 points with its national tournament appearance.
Calvin then scored with three of its four winter sports teams as its men's and
women's basketball teams earned NCAA III Tournament bids while its women's
swimming and diving team placed sixth at the NCAA III Championships. The sixth
place finish by the Calvin women's swimming and diving team was worth 72.75
points while the women's basketball team picked up 25 points while the men's
basketball team earned 50 points by advancing to the second round of the
national tournament.
This is the 11th year for the U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup chase at the
NCAA III level. Calvin finished 23rd during the 2003-04 season with 382.5
points, 22nd during the 2002-03 season with 403.75 points, 11th during the
2001-2002 season with 490 points; 9th during the 2000-2001 season with 474
points; 6th during the 1999-2000 season with 561 points; 7th during the 1998-99
season with 350 points; 25th during the 1997-98 season with 200 points; 22nd
for the 1996-97 season with 321.5 points and 11th during the 1995-96 campaign
with 425 points.
