CALVIN SPORTS REPORT (RESEND) FOR MAY 15, 2006

(Editor's Note: The Fifth Third River Bank Run is a 25K run, not a 15K run. We
regret the error in the previous story)

Calvin College was well represented by alumni of the Calvin cross country and
track and field teams at the 29th running of the prestigious Fifth Third River
Bank Run in Grand Rapids this past Saturday.

In the men's 25k run, four alumn from the Calvin men's cross country
program cracked the top 50 with the top finisher former cross country and track
and field All-American Matt Edwards (2004 graduate) who finished 21st with a
time of 1:20.16. Edwards was a member of Calvin's national championship
cross country teams in 2000 and 2003. He was followed by 2005 graduate Kris
Koster who placed 30th with a time of 1:21.48. An All-American in cross country
and a two-time All-American in track and field, Koster was a member of
Calvin's national championship cross country teams in 2000 and 2003.

Calvin assistant cross country coach Robert Hyde took 39th with a time of
1:25.06. A 1997 Calvin graduate, Hyde was a cross country All-American for
Calvin in 1994. In addition, 2003 graduate Matt Sicilia took 42nd in 1:25.22.
Sicilia was a member of Calvin's national championship cross country team in
2000 and served as a student assistant coach on Calvin's national
championship team in 2003.

In the men's 5K run, 2003 graduate Joel Klooster took sixth with a time of
15:25. Klooster was a two-time All-American in cross country and a national
runner-up in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters in track and field in 2002.

In the women's 25k run, 1995 graduate Renea Bluekamp-Walkotten was 33rd in a
time of 1:46.33. Walkotten was an individual national champion for Calvin in
cross country in 2003 and was a member of three consecutive national runner-up
teams. She was also a multiple All-American in track and field.

In addition, 1990 graduate Deb VanderSteen-Lenters took 43rd with a time of
1:50.30. Lenters was the MIAA's Most Valuable Runner in cross country in
1989.

Also of note, the runner-up in the women's 25k with a time of 1:28.42 was
former Luther College (IA) standout Turena Johnson-Lane who was a distance
rival of Calvin distance standout Betsy Haverkamp-Frens during the
mid-1990's. Johnson-Lane was an individual national champion in both cross
country and in track and field (5,000 meters and 10,000 meters) during her
career at Luther.

In the women's 5k run, 2004 graduate Jessie Lair-Klooster was third with a
time of 18:59. At Calvin, Klooster was a two-time All-American in cross country
and a three-time national qualifier in track and field. A 1984 graduate of
Calvin, Laura Vroon took second in the 5K with a time of 19:11. Vroon was the
MIAA's Most Valuable Runner in cross country in 1983.

Holly Breuker-Shoemaker also took 25th in the 5K run, clocking in with a time
of 22:16. A four-time All-MIAA selection in track and field, Breuker was an
individual national champion in the 400 meter hurdles in 1996 and ran on a
national championship 4x400 meter relay team in 1994.

Calvin men's and women's swim coach Dan Gelderloos also completed the 15K
run on Saturday, clocking in with a time of 1:54.30. Gelderloos is a 1994
Calvin graduate.
