CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 29, 2006 (Part One)

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TENNIS

The Calvin men's and women's tennis teams are currently competing in MIAA Tournament competition. The women's tournament is being hosted by Hope in Holland while the men's tournament is being held at Kalamazoo College.

After day one, the Calvin women have advanced three individuals into championship flights in the singles competition. Junior Kari Lipinski (Northpointe Christian HS) has advanced to the finals at No. 4 singles, junior Allyson Logan (Fort Wayne, IN) has advanced to the finals at No. 5 singles and senior Kim Bosscher (Calvin Christian HS) has advanced to the finals at No. 6 singles.

In doubles, all three of Calvin's doubles tandems are competing in the semifinals of the their respective championship flights.

On the men's side, Calvin senior Rafael Siebenschein (Lynden, WA) has advanced to the championship finals at No. 2 singles while junior Dan Volkema (Holland Christian HS) has advanced to the finals at No. 5 singles. Calvin does not have any remaining players in championship finals but has several players competing in either third place matches or consolation rounds. MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

HILLSDALE - The second day of competition at the Hillsdale "Gina" Relays brought another school record to the Calvin track and field program as well as several national qualifying performances.

Highlighting Friday's competition was the performance of senior Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin HS) who took second in the women's open heptathlon with a school record score of 4,894 points, breaking the previous record of 4,852 points set by 2003 national champion Annie VanderLaan. Hendricks took second behind Michigan State's Etienne Chaplin who tallied a score of 5,050 points. The total by Hendricks is not only an NCAA III automatic qualifying score but also the eighth-best score in NCAA III women's track and field history in the event.

Hendricks completed her record-breaking score on Friday by leaping 17-10 in the long jump, throwing the javelin 116 feet and then clocking in with a time of 2:30.00 in the 800 meters.

Hendricks was not the only Calvin athlete to shine in a multi-event on Friday as junior Eric DeVries (Unity Christian HS) and sophomore Kelby McClelland (Mercer, PA) both posted NCAA III provisional qualifying scores in the decathlon for the first time in their collegiate careers. DeVries came up with a two-day total of 6,078 points while McClelland finished with 6,028 points. Individual event performances for Friday were not available for either DeVries or McClelland.

Other highlights for the Calvin women included:

*Sophomore Christina Overbeck (Seattle, WA/Bellevue Christian HS) clocking in with a strong NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 36:50.10 in the 10,000 meters which shaved nearly four minutes off her previous best time.

*Sophomore Sarah Wittingen (East Grand Rapids HS) clocking in with a strong NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 1:02.78 in the 400 meter hurdles.

*Junior Lydia Singer (Wilmington, DE/Hillcrest Academy) clocking in with a season-best time of 11:21.19 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.

*Junior Katie Bolt (Grand Rapids Christian HS) coming up with a career-best and strong NCAA III provisional qualifying height of 5-7 in the high jump.

*Junior Lisa Winkle (Grand Rapids South Christian HS) posting a career-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying leap of 18-5 ¾ in the long jump.

*Junior Megann VanderVliet (Oakville, ON/Oakville Trafalgar HS) cranking out a season-best and strong NCAA III provisional qualifying throw of 44-0 ¾ in the shot put.

Other highlights for the Calvin men included:

*NCAA III provisional qualifying times from junior Tim Finnegan (Los Alamos, NM), freshman Jed Christiansen (Greenville, PA/Greenville HS) and senior Harrison Jorritsma (Beamsville, ON) in the 10,000 meters with Finnegan clocking in with a time of 30:20.64, Christiansen a time of 30:21.88 and Jorritsma a time of 30:48.13.

*A season-best jump of 6-6 ¾ for freshman Michael Buist (Calvin Christian HS).

*A season-best and strong NCAA III provisional qualifying leap of 23-6 ¼ for junior Josh Meckes (Bay City/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS).

*A first place time throw of 57-2 in the shot put by senior Nate Meckes (Bay City/Westland Lutheran HS).

*And a trio of strong performance in the 5,000 meters by sophomore Tad Hulst (Zeeland HS), sophomore Jon Gries (King of Prussia, PA) and sophomore Dan VandenAkker (South Christian HS). Hulst had a time of 14:55.07, Gries a time of 15:07.34 and VandenAkker a career-best time of 15:13.33.
