CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SATURDAY, APRIL 22, 2006

SOFTBALL
Albion 1, Calvin 0
Calvin 7, Albion 3

GRAND RAPIDS - The Knights split a conference double-header with visiting
Albion College (21-15, 9-5 MIAA) this afternoon, rebounding from a slim 1-0
loss to take the second game 7-3. Calvin now has a 13-17 overall record and a
5-7 MIAA record.

The winning run came in Albion's half of the first inning off of two base
hits and an error. Calvin threatened many times in its seven innings at the
plate, including two-hit bottoms of the second and fourth innings. The Knights
had a last chance in the seventh inning as sophomore Cori VanKoevering
(Hudsonville/Unity Christian) hit a lead-off single and Albion committed one
error to allow another Knight on board. Two consecutive strike-outs ended the
inning and the pressure situation, however, and Albion took the 1-0 victory.

Pitcher Kristin Folkerts (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) took the hard
loss after allowing only four hits in seven innings of work. Albion's Andrea
English allowed six hits but also had 11 strikeouts that kept the Knights from
scoring any runs.

Both VanKoevering and sophomore Ruth Diemer (McBain/McBain NM Christian) were
2 for 3 from the plate.

Albion again began the scoring in game two in the bottom of the first inning,
gaining one run as lead-off batter Breanna Przeslawski was walked and then
driven home by a one-out triple from Allison Smart. Przeslawski and Smith
teamed up again in the Albion third to give the Britons a 2-0 lead as
Przeslawski tripled and Smart hit an RBI single.

The Knights then posted a huge fifth inning, scoring four runs off of three
singles and four Albion errors. The hits came from freshman Loren Scarbrough
(Antioch, IL/North Suburban Lake), sophomore Samantha Ehlert
(Rockford/Rockford), and freshman Mallory Scholten (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids
Christian). Two of the runs were results of errors while one run was driven in
by a walk. Calvin took a 4-2 lead.

A double and an error allowed the Britons to narrow the score to 4-3 in their
half of the fifth inning, but Calvin answered back with a one-run top of the
sixth when Scarbrough and freshman Brittany Moriarity (Muskegon/Mona Shores)
both singled and Ehlert reached on an error. Calvin led 5-3.

Albion went three up, three down in the bottom of the sixth, but Calvin again
increased the scoring margin in the top of the seventh. Diemer singled and
then crossed the plate on an RBI triple from VanKoevering, who scored as
Scarbrough reached on an error, giving Calvin a 7-3 lead. As Albion did not
score any runs in the bottom of the inning. Calvin walked away with the 7-3
victory.

Folkerts (10-7) was accredited with the win in game two, as she pitched the
final four innings after junior Ruth Anna Spooner (Twin Falls, ID/Idaho School
for the Deaf) pitched the first three. Diemer, Scholten, and Scarbrough each
had two hits in four at-bats, while VanKoevering's triple was her
team-leading third on the season.

Fans can catch Calvin's next games on Thursday, April 27. The Knights will
face Hope College at 3:30 pm at Calvin Field.

and remain in fourth place in the MIAA standings with a 12-8 conference mark,

In Saturday's opener, Olivet (8-21 overall, 5-15 MIAA) jumped out to a 7-0
lead before the Knights began to claw back, scoring three times in the fourth,
twice in the sixth and once in the seventh. Olivet added an important insurance
run in the top of the seventh however and stranded two Calvin runners in
scoring position in the bottom of the seventh to close out the game.

Senior Tyler VanEps (Denver, CO) and junior Nick Caudle (Calvin Christian HS)
both went 2-for-4 for Calvin the loss. Senior Tim Stoeffler (St. Joseph) took
the loss to fall to 2-4 on the year.

In game two, Calvin received a complete-game pitching gem from freshman Nate
Pocock (Wayland, MA) as Pocock tossed a six-hit shutout, striking out four and
walking only one.

Calvin scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the second as senior
Kyle Hollemans (East Kentwood HS) singled in sophomore Alex Marcus (Willmark,
MN) from second base.

Pocock moved to 4-3 on the year with the win. Calvin collected only four hits
in the win but reaped the benefits of three Olivet errors.
