Calvin extended its win streak to six games with a doubleheader sweep over visiting Kalamazoo, winning by scores of 5-2 and 9-7 Wednesday afternoon at Calvin Field.

With the sweep, Calvin (9-11 overall, 7-3 MIAA) moved into a tie for second place with Albion in the league standings, one game behind league-leading Adrian (8-2). Albion and Adrian both split doubleheaders on Wednesday with Hope and Olivet respectively.

In Wednesday's opener, Calvin received a complete-game pitching performance from senior Tim Stoeffler (St. Joseph) and four RBI's by senior Kyle Hollemans (East Kentwood HS) to gain a come-from-behind win. Kalamazoo (14-6 overall, 6-4 MIAA) scored a pair of runs in the first but the Knights came back with a run on an RBI single by Hollemans that plated sophomore Alex Marcus (Willmar, MN) who led off the inning with a double.

In the third, Calvin loaded the bases and with two outs, Hollemans ripped a double in the left-centerfield gap that cleared the bases to give the Knights a 4-2 edge. The Knights added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI single by senior Mark Tigchelaar (Grand Rapids Christian HS). Stoeffler finished the game with six strikeouts against three walks while scattering five Kalamazoo hits. Stoeffler allowed only one hit over the final three innings.

In game two, Calvin jumped out to a 6-0 lead on a six-run second inning and then held off Kalamazoo the rest of the way. Hollemans belted a pair of run-scoring doubles while junior Kyle Fletcher (Fort Wayne, IN), senior Tyler VanEps (Denver, CO) and freshman Jacob Vriesman (Denver, CO) picked up two hits apiece. Vriesman finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI's including a run-scoring double in the sixth that provided an important insurance run.

Senior Kyle Snoeyink (Calvin Christian HS) came on in relief of freshman starter Nate Pocock (Wayland, MA) and picked up his first save of the year, getting the five outs of the game. Pocock (3-2) picked up the win, improving to 3-0 in conference play as he struck out four and walked two.

Hollemans finished the afternoon 4-for-6 at the plate with six RBI's and a pair of runs scored.

Calvin and Kalamazoo will resume their four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Kalamazoo's Woodworth Field.
