Calvin Sixth in Latest U.S. Sports Academy Director's Cup Standings

A strong winter sports season has kept Calvin College in the top 10 of the
latest Director's Cup Division III standings sponsored by the United States
Sports Academy.

After the recently completed winter sports season, Calvin is in sixth place in

the NCAA Division III standings with 430.75 points, less than two points
behind fifth place Tufts (MA), less than 25 points behind Washington University
(MO) and 48 points behind third place Wisconsin-LaCrosse. The College of New
Jersey is in first place with 626.25 points, less than a point ahead of
defending champion Williams (MA) which has 625.5 points.

Sponsored by the United States Sports Academy , the Director's Cup
competition is held at the NCAA I, II and III levels as well as for NAIA
schools.

The standings are based on points earned by teams that compete in NCAA and
NAIA Championship events and is presented annually by the National Association

of Collegiate Director's of Athletics (NACDA) to the best overall collegiate
athletics program in the country.

The recently completed winter season includes the sports of men's and women's

basketball, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's swimming, men's
and
women's indoor track and field, men's wrestling, skiing and fencing. Schools
that advance to the national meet in both indoor and outdoor track and field
must take the highest team finish of the two seasons but can not count both.
Calvin scored with three of its four winter sports teams as its men's and
women's basketball teams earned NCAA III Tournament bids while its women's
swimming and diving team placed sixth at the NCAA III Championships. The sixth
place finish by the Calvin women's swimming and diving team was worth 72.75
points while the women's basketball team picked up 25 points while the
men's basketball team earned 50 points by advancing to the second round of
the national tournament.

After the fall sports season Calvin was third with a total of 283 points.
Calvin was able to build its point total on the performance of its men's and
women's cross country teams, its women's volleyball team and its men's and
women's soccer teams at the NCAA III Championships this past November.

Combined, eight of Calvin's 11 sports teams that have completed their seasons

during the 2005-06 academic year have scored Director's Cup points. Calvin's
best-ever national finish in the final Director's Cup standings is sixth place
which came during the 1999-00 and 20004-05 academic years. Calvin scored 561
points during the 1999-00 season and 617 points a year ago.

Since the Director's Cup was initiated at the NCAA Division III level for the
1995-96 academic year, Calvin is one of only nine schools to finish in the
top-25 all 10 previous years. Joining Calvin in the group are Williams, College
of New Jersey , Amherst (MA), Middlebury (VT), Ithaca (NY), Wisconsin-LaCrosse,
SUNY-Cortland and Emory ( Ga. ).

Calvin has posted four top-10 national finishes as it also took seventh (350
points) during the 1998-99 season and ninth (474 points) during the 2000-01
season to go with its pair of top-six finishes.

Calvin is one of two schools from the MIAA in the current top 25 standings as
Hope is 15th with 335.5 points.
