MEN'S TENNIS
Grand Valley State 5, Calvin 4

GRANDVILLE * Calvin fell to 2-2 on the dual match season with a hard-fought 5-4 defeat to Division II Grand Valley State late Thursday night at the Ramblewood Tennis Courts. Thursday's match did not finish until 1:00 a.m. Friday morning because of an evening start time and the length of the match.

The match was not decided until the final match of the evening was complete - at No. 2 singles when Calvin senior Rafael Siebenschein (Lynden, WA) was forced to retire in the third set because of cramps.

Calvin and Grand Valley State split the six singles points but the Lakers were able to take two of three doubles points which proved to be pivotal. Grand Valley entered the match ranked third in the Division II Central Region rankings while Calvin is ranked 14th in the Division III Central Region rankings.

Calvin returns to action next Monday when it opens its spring break trip to Orlando, Florida against Bethel College (MN) at 4:00 p.m. (EST).

2006 WOMEN'S TENNIS OUTLOOK

A veteran Calvin women's tennis team will look to make a move up the MIAA standings in 2006. A year ago, the Knights took fourth in the final MIAA standings after placing fourth in the MIAA dual match standings and then taking third at the hotly-contested MIAA Tournament.

Competition in the MIAA is again expected to be fierce but with four seniors and eight returning letterwinners on the 2006 rosters, the Knights feel they are up to the challenge. (Photo of Amy Zeilstra by Jeff Nyhoff).

Calvin's senior class includes Amy Zeilstra (Oak Brook, IL/Timothy Christian HS), Kim Bosscher (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS), Annie Huizenga (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) and Kristina Plaisier (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS).

A two-time first team All-MIAA selection, Zeilstra has been a fixture at the No. 1 singles slot over the last two years. Huizenga has also been a regular member of the Calvin lineup during her career and may move up a spot after filling the No. 3 singles slot a year ago. Huizenga was 15-4 at No. 3 singles in 2005 and finished third at that flight at the 2005 MIAA Tournament. Bosscher has been a regular at No. 6 singles and posted a 12-4 singles record in 2005 while placing third at the MIAA Tournament. Plaisier has been a strong utility player during her collegiate career and can fill a singles flight or a doubles tandem. In 2005, Plaisier played primarily at No. 3 doubles.

Calvin's junior class consists of Kari Lipinski (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian HS), Allyson Logan (Fort Wayne, IN/Concordia Lutheran HS). Logan was 16-3 at No. 5 singles in 2005 and also placed third at the MIAA Tournament. Lipinski was 13-6 at No. 4 singles a year ago and earned runner-up honors in the flight at the 2005 MIAA Tournament. (Photo of Annie Huizenga by Jeff Nyhoff).

Calvin's sophomore contingent includes Emily Oosterhouse (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Gwen Vryhoff (Palos Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS). Both players saw limited action in 2005 with Vryhoff seeing the most time as she teamed with Logan at No. 2 doubles, recording a season record of 7-9.

Calvin also has three freshmen in Jackie Paauw (Grand Rapids/Calvin Christian HS), Ricki Scripps (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) and Nicole Mulder (Byron Center/South Christian HS).

The non-conference schedule prior to spring break includes matches against Grand Valley State, the University of Chicago and Carthage. Calvin's spring break trip will take the Knights to Orlando, Florida. While there, the Maroon and Gold will face teams from Otterbein, Trinity (CT), Illinois Wesleyan, Wellesley and Hamline. After spring break, Calvin will also compete in non-conference matches with Wheaton, Olivet Nazarene, Aquinas and Indiana Wesleyan.

Calvin opens its MIAA campaign on March 11 at Kalamazoo. The MIAA Tournament is scheduled to be held at Hope on April 28 and 29.
