MEN'S AND WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

STERLING, Va. -- D3hoops.com has announced the fifth annual D3hoops.com
All-Region men's and women's basketball teams for Division III basketball.

Players were nominated by the Sports Information Directors at the various
schools, who were contacted several times as the season wound down to remind
them to make their players eligible. A total of 599 players were nominated
nationwide.

The ballot was then made available to SIDs, who voted for 10 players in their
region. SIDs voted for six frontcourt players and four backcourt players and
the top vote-getters at each position were named to the All-Region team.

"We are thankful to the Sports Information Directors across Division III who
took the time to nominate and vote to provide broader recognition to these
worthy student-athletes," said D3hoops.com publisher Pat Coleman. "Their
continued help and participation is integral to the All-Region team and
everything else we do."

A regional Player of the Year and Coach of the Year were selected in each
region for the first time, the Player of the Year as the top vote-getter in
each region and the Coach of the Year in consultation with regional members.

On the women's side, Calvin junior center Lisa Winkle was named to the Great
Lakes All-Region first team. On the men's side, Calvin freshman point guard
was named to the Great Lakes All-Region third team.

A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of South Christian High School, Winkle
is receiving Great Lakes All-Region honors from D3hoops.com for the third
straight year. She was named to the Great Lakes All-Region second team a year
ago and to the third team the year before.

During the 2005-06 season, Winkle averaged 15.7 points and 9.8 rebounds a game
while connecting on 59.7 percent of her field goal attempts. Winkle also
averaged 2.4 blocks, 2.1 assists and 1.7 steals per game. She was ranked among
the NCAA III leaders in field goal percentage and blocks-per-game throughout
the year and notched double-digits in scoring in 27 of a possible 28 games
along with 16 double-double (points and rebounds) efforts. In addition, she was
named Wisconsin Lutheran Tip-Off tournament MVP and named MIAA Player of the
Week during week #1 of MIAA season. She was then named MIAA Co-MVP with Hope
senior guard Bria Ebels and named to All-MIAA first team for third straight
year. She also helped Calvin gain its second straight NCAA III Tournament bid
and a Top-25 national ranking as the Knights closed out the season with a 23-5
overall mark.

A native of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and a graduate of Sioux Falls Christian
High School, Veldhouse started in all 30 games for a Calvin team that captured
its first outright MIAA regular season title since 2002 as Knights finished
23-7 overall and 13-1 in the MIAA. Over the course of the season, he averaged
13.5 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game while connecting on 43.4
(128-of-195) percent of his field goal attempts, 39.6 percent (44 of 111) of
his three-point field goal attempts and 85.4 percent (105-of-123) of his free
throw attempts. Veldhouse notched double-digits in scoring 23 of 30 games and
finished year with a 10-game double-figure scoring streak. He was named MIAA
Player of the Week #10 of the season and also to All-MIAA first team, becoming
the only freshman (men's basketball) in the MIAA to receive either first or
second team All-MIAA honors. Veldhouse also established an MIAA Tournament
single-game record for free throws made with a 14-for-14 performance at the
line in an 82-76 first round MIAA Tournament victory over Olivet on February
22. Veldhouse twice hit game-winning shots in closing seconds during MIAA
season, hitting a two-point shot with 1.6 seconds left to beat Olivet 73-71 on
January 18 and then connecting on a game-winning three-point shot with 1.7
seconds left to upset fourth-ranked Hope 59-58 on February 8. He also helped
Calvin advance to NCAA III Tournament for third straight year with the Knights
closing out the season with an overall record of 23-7.

2006 MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD OUTLOOK
(Third in a Series Of Six Springs Sports Outlooks)

The Calvin men's track and field team will go after its 13th straight MIAA
title this spring. The current string of 12 is the longest championship streak
in MIAA men's track and field history.

Under the direction of head coach Dr. Jong-Il Kim, the Knights will build
their hopes around a strong base of throwers and distance runners while also
sprinkling in a mix of veterans and newcomers in the sprints and remaining
field events.

The Calvin throwing contingent will be led by seniors Nate Meckes (Bay
City/Westland Lutheran HS) and Justin Grasmeyer (Norwalk, CA/Valley Christian
HS). A four-time NCAA III All-American, Meckes is coming off an incredible
junior campaign that saw him take second at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and
Field Championships in the discus and fourth in the shot put. His second place
throw of 194-10 was the second-longest in NCAA III history and qualified him
for the USTAF National Championships in Carson, California. During the year,
Meckes was also named the MIAA's Most Outstanding Field Event Performer for
the second time in his career. In addition, he was also named the Division III
Great Lakes Regional Athlete of the Year by the Unites States Track and Field
Coaches Association for the second time in his career. The current MIAA record
holder in both the shot put (56-3) and discus (176-3), Meckes will look to
continue his throwing prowess this spring. Grasmeyer fought through injuries a
year ago to collect All-America accolades in the discus for the second straight
year, finishing eighth at the NCAA III Championships with a career-best throw
of 172-10.

Other throwers to watch include junior Kyle Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD/Sioux
Falls Christian High School), sophomore Ryan Jensen (Grand Rapids/Northview HS)
and freshman Kyle Cherney (Gallup, NM/Rehoboth Christian HS). Veldhouse is a
solid contributor to the discus and returns after spending last spring studying
overseas. A transfer from Ferris State University, Jensen will be a strong
addition in the discus and hammer throw. Cherney is a specialist in the javelin
and should make an immediate impact in the event. Not to be forgotten is junior
multi-event man Eric DeVries (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS). As a sophomore,
DeVries nearly posted an NCAA III provisional qualifying score in the grueling
decathlon competition. DeVries is a valuable point producer in the throwing
events and can also fill spots in several other events.

The Calvin distance crew will again be the backbone of the team led by junior
Tim Finnegan (Los Alamos, NM/Home Schooled), a returning All-American in both
the 5,000 and 10,000 meter runs. Senior Harrison Jorritsma (Beamsville,
ON/Smithville Christian HS) is another veteran face to watch. An All-American
in cross country last November, Jorritsma will be looking to earn a spot at the
NCAA III Track and Field Championships for the first time. Jorritsma has
specialized in the 3,000 meter steeplechase the past two years but will also
compete in the 5,000 and 10,000 meter runs.

Other returning letterwinners to watch in the distance group include seniors
Tyler Zwagerman (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and Jessie Kleinjan (Chino,
CA/Ontario Christian HS), junior Todd Schuster (Denver, CO/Denver Christian
HS), sophomore Bill Reynolds (Newtown Square, PA/Delaware County Christian HS)
and Jon Gries (King of Prussia, PA/Upper Merion HS). Zwagerman came close to an
NCAA III provisional qualifying time in the 10,000 meters last year while
Reynolds picked up a provisional mark in the 5,000 meters in late April. An
800/1500 meter specialist, Schuster recorded NCAA III provisional qualifying
times in both events last spring and will seek a berth to the national meet
durin his junior campaign. Kleinjan is a savvy veteran with the ability to
score points in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meter events. Gries is coming off a
standout sophomore cross country season and will look to make a mark in both
the 1,500 and 5,000 meter runs.

A pair of newcomers should also make an early impact as sophomore Tad Hulst
(Zeeland/Zeeland HS) will run in the 1,500 and 5,000 meters after transferring
from Carthage College (WI) while freshman Jed Christiansen (Greenville,
PA/Greenville HS) will look to transfer his cross country success from this
past fall onto the track this spring in the 5,000 and 10,000 meter runs.
Christiansen was an NCAA III All-American in cross country this past November,
placing 34th at the national meet.

Calvin also returns a solid group of sprinters paced by senior Chris Friebel
(Shelby, OH/Shelby HS) who is looking to bounce back from an injury-plagued
junior year that forced him to miss the MIAA Championships and prevent him from
defending his 2004 league title in the 200 meters. Senior Brian VanDyken (Grand
Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) is another talented veteran who will provide
leadership in the 200 and 400 meters. Sophomores Joel Baker
(Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) and Jared Cok (Bozeman, MT/Manhattan
Christian HS) will also fill key roles in the 200 and 400 meters. Along with
VanDyken, Baker and Cok were part of a Calvin 4x400 meter relay team that
clocked an NCAA III provisional qualifying time last May. Sophomores Kelby
McClelland (Mercer, PA/Mercer Area HS) and Taylor Voss (Tempe, AZ/Valley
Christian HS) will fill out Calvin's hurdling crew.

Other sprinters to watch include sophomore Dustin Smith (Hamilton/Hamilton HS)
and freshmen Brian Pirog (Ada/Forest Hills Northern HS) and Brad Stroner
(Woodland/Lakewood HS).

Calvin also has a strong group of jumpers returning led by two-time All-MIAA
selection Tim Zwiers (Pella, IA/Pella Christian HS). A senior, Zwiers has
captured the league title in the triple jump two times in the last three years
and again should be one of the league's best this spring. Junior Josh Meckes
(Bay City/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) is also a two-time All-MIAA selection and
was the MIAA's Most Outstanding Field Event Performer in 2004. The younger
brother of Nate Meckes, Josh is the defending league champion in the long jump
and is also a two-time national qualifier in the event. Sophomore Luke Allison
(Lakeville, MN/Minnehaha Academy) flirted with the 23-foot mark in the long
jump last spring, posting an NCAA III provisional mark of 22-10. Allison
returns to provide strong depth in both the long jump and triple jump.
Sophomore Tim Frazier (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Claremont HS) is another talented
jumper who could make an impact this year.

In the high jump, Calvin returns sophomore Jason Vande Kopple (Grand
Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who had a strong freshman campaign. Freshman
Michael Buist (Grand Rapids/Calvin Christian HS) has a career-best jump of 6-6
and could also step to the forefront in his first year in a Calvin track and
field uniform.
DeVries is a returning veteran in the pole vault as is senior Chris Becker
(Reading, PA/Berks Christian HS). Becker can also fill a spot in the high jump
lineup. DeVries and Becker will be joined by freshman Mike Vanden Berg (Grand
Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) this year.

Calvin will again open its outdoor campaign with a spring trip south to Gulf
Shores, Alabama. On the way down, the Knights will compete at a March 18
invitational hosted by Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. The Knights will
then hit another invitational hosted by Rhodes College on March 25 on the way
back. The MIAA season begins on April 1 at Tri-State and concludes with the
MIAA Championships scheduled for May 4 and 5 at Albion College. The NCAA III
Championships are scheduled to be held on May 25-27 at Illinois Benedictine
University in Lisle, Illinois.
