GRAND RAPIDS - Tonight's conference match-up between the Knights and the
visiting Albion Britons was all about the threes. A three-pointer is just the
thing to raise team morale and invoke crowd participation-and Calvin (17-2,
10-1 MIAA) capitalized on that at the right moments on its way to a 71-62
victory over Albion (13-8, 5-7 MIAA).
Calvin's first crucial three came after a 10-0 Albion run left the Knights
scoreless after the first 6:30 of play until junior Lisa Winkle (Grand
Rapids/South Christian) made Calvin's first points with a lay-up. A
three-pointer by sophomore Lindsey Peuler (Grandville/Grandville) then closed
the gap to five, with Albion up 10-5, and started a 9-2 run that brought the
Knights within one, 12-11.
Though Albion extended its lead to seven at 18-11, a three-pointer from
freshman Kelly Trewhella (Rockford/Rockford) gave the Knights a boost to
18-14. After freshman Marcia Harris (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian)
then added a lay-up and a free-throw, a third three-pointer by freshman Kristi
Brummel (Grand Rapids/South Christian) gave Calvin its first lead of the
night, 20-18 with just under 5:00 in the first half. However, Albion made
three three-pointers of its own in the last 2:40, allowing the Britons to end
the half with a 30-24 lead.
That Calvin came out to win in the second half was obvious as the Knights
converted three consecutive lay-ups, two from Lisa Winkle and one from Harris
that tied the game at 30. Albion reestablished a seven point lead, which
Calvin reduced to two at 37-35. Albion extended its lead again, 43-35 before
another Trewhella three changed the pace of the game. Trewhella then brought
Calvin within one at 43-42 with two made free-throws. Calvin finally managed
to take the lead back at 48-46 when Harris scored two with just over 8:00 to
play. Calvin held this lead for the rest of the game.
When Brummel made Calvin's fifth three-point shot of the game, she gave the
Knights a strong 10 point lead, 62-52 with under 2:30 to play. Brummel came
up big again from behind the arc when Albion threatened by edging within five
points as her third three of the game put Calvin up 67-59 with just under a
minute in regulation time. Brummel scored her 11th and 12th points on
free-throws in the last seconds of the game, sealing the Calvin with by again
establishing a 10-point lead. Calvin finished out the game nine points ahead
of Albion, 71-62.
Besides Brummel's critical 12 points, Calvin also had big performances from
Harris, who scored 17 points, Lisa Winkle, who added 14 points and 13 rebounds
for her 24th collegiate double-double, and Peuler, who scored 11 points.
Albion was led by Jessica Babcock with a game-high 19 points, Kellyn
Glynn's 13 point effort, and Jaime Fornetti, who added 10 points and 6
rebounds.
With her 13-rebounds, Lisa Winkle boosted her career total to 624 caroms,
moving past Kerry Walters and Jill Kreuze and into third place on the Calvin
career rebounding list.
Calvin will travel to St. Mary's College in Indiana this Saturday for a key
conference game slated to start at 3:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast vial
RealAudio through the Calvin web site at: http://www.calvin.edu/sports.
