Women's Basketball Stretches Win Streak to Four With Road Win at Kalamazoo

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 62, Kalamazoo 39

KALAMAZOO * The nationally-ranked Calvin women's basketball team stretched its win streak to four games and remained unbeaten in league play with a 62-39 conference victory at Kalamazoo College Wednesday night.

Ranked 24th in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 poll, Calvin improved to 6-1 overall and to 2-0 in the MIAA with the win.

Calvin's defense was once again the story as the Knights held Kalamazoo to just 32.6 percent field goal shooting and to just 14 first half points. Calvin has held its opponents under 50 points in its last three games.

Calvin led 25-14 at halftime against Kalamazoo and then proceeded to hit 50 percent of its field goal attempts in the second half to pull away for the win.

Freshman center Marcia Harris (Grand Rapids Christian HS) led Calvin with 17 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals while junior forward Lisa Winkle (South Christian HS) notched her 18th collegiate double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Senior forward Sarah Winkle (South Christian HS) added eight rebounds, a blocked shot and a steal. Freshman guard Kelly Trewhella (Rockford HS) chipped in with eight points off the bench including a pair of three-point field goals.

Kalamazoo (3-2 overall, 0-1 MIAA) was led in defeat by Stefanie Salasky with 12 points.

Calvin features a roster that includes just one senior, one junior, four sophomores and six freshmen. Despite its youthful makeup, head coach John Ross is pleased with the direction his team is headed.

"I like where our team is at right now," said Ross. "With as many freshmen as we have this year, we won't always be pretty on offense. But the one thing we have been consistent with is our defensive effort. I'm very pleased with the way our players have bought into our defensive system."

Calvin also held the rebounding advantage on Wednesday, outboarding the Hornets 42-25 including 16-6 on the offensive glass.

Calvin will now break until December 17 when it hosts Concordia University (MI) at 3:00 p.m.
