CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR NOV. 29, 2005
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
ALMA * Tonight marked the MIAA season opener for both Alma and the Knights. Coming off a 2-1 record in non-conference play, Calvin (3-1, 1-0 MIAA) captured its first league victory, defeating the Scots (2-1, 0-1 MIAA) 58-55.
Play was quite even in the first half, as the game was tied seven times, with two ties in the last four minutes of play. Both teams led by as much as four points, Alma at the 17:30 mark of a jumper by Darcie Phillip and Calvin with just over seven minutes left in the half with a made jumper by freshman Sarah Partridge (East Lansing/East Lansing). Alma came away with the 30-27 lead at halftime, however, as Darcie Phillip scored another two points with a lay-up at the 1:00 mark.
Alma extended its lead to eight in the early part of the second half, assisted by 7 made free throw attempts, leading 39-31. Sparked by two consecutive made jumpers by junior Lisa Winkle (Grand Rapids/South Christian), the Knights went on an amazing 19-2 run which included three three-pointers from the hands of sophomores Erica Boonstra (Crestwood, IL/Chicago Christian) and Lindsey Peuler (Grandville/Grandville), and freshman Partridge, putting the Knights up 50-41. Calvin led However, the Scots rallied back with a 8-0 run, with all eight points scored by Erica Phillip. Lisa Winkle answered with two made free throws, followed by two more from Erica Phillip. With just under two minutes to play, Calvin was hanging on to a one-point lead 52-51. Lindsey Peuler helped extend that lead to five, 56-51, with under 30 seconds on the clock, making two crucial free-throw attempts. Two free throws by Darcie Phillip and a lay-up by Erica Phillip brought Alma within one point again !
at 56-55 with only 10 seconds left in the game. Calvin freshman Kristi Brummel (Byron Center/South Christian) bucketed two important free-throws to give the Knights a 3 point lead and the 58-55 victory.
Calvin was led in scoring by freshman Marcia Harris (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) with 13 points, followed by Lisa Winkle with 11 points, senior Sarah Winkle (Grand Rapids/South Christian) with 10 points, and Peuler and Partridge with 7 each.
Erica Phillip had 16 points and 9 rebounds for Alma, Ashley Matuzak scored 15 points, and Darcie Phillip had 8 points.
Calvin will return to action on Friday night at home at 8:00 pm against Carthage.
