Calvin Takes Early Leads in Sports Academy Directors' Cup
Nov. 27, 2005
The U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup opens its 11th year for Division III
and Calvin College has taken the early lead as the first set of Division III
standings has been released.
Calvin has unseated Williams College (Mass.), a nine-time Sports Academy
Directors' champion, for the top spot in the Division III standings. Calvin's
top placement marks the first time since May 2002 that a college other than
Williams held the lead in the standings.
Leading with a runner-up finish in men's cross country, Calvin posted 194
points. The Knights also placed ninth in women's volleyball and 17th in women's
cross country.
The first set of standings does not include field hockey, men's and women's
soccer or football.
Calvin has also scored points in men's and women's soccer but those points are
not reflected in the first set of standings. The final fall standings will be
released sometime close to Christmas. Competition will continue with the
winter sports season and finish with the conclusion of the spring sports season
in May.
The U.S. Sports Academy Director's Cup is based on points earned by teams that
compete in NCAA Championship events and is presented annually by the National
Association of Collegiate Director's of Athletics (NACDA) to the best overall
collegiate athletics program in the country. The NACDA Director's Cup race is
held at the NCAA I, II and III levels and also for NAIA institutions.
Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA III Championship
competition in up to 18 sports -- nine for men and nine for women. Each
national champion receives 100 points with a national runner-up finish worth
90
points. Third place is worth 80 points and fourth place finishes count for 75
points with a sliding point scale continuing on down by order of finish.
A year ago, Calvin finished sixth in the final Division III standings with a
total of 617 points, matching its best-ever finish in the competition.
Calvin is one of only 10 schools to finish in the top-25 every year that the
competition has been held at the NCAA III level.
