CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2005
WOMEN'S SOCCER
WESTERVILLE, OH * Calvin's first trip to the NCAA Division III tournament
since 1998 ended up in heartbreak as Ohio Wesleyan eliminated Calvin 6-5 in
penalty kicks in a first round tournament game at Otterbein College. The game
will go down in the record books as a 2-2 tie, but the Battling Bishops
advanced because of the win in the shoot out.
Both teams scored two goals with-in regulation time. Ohio Wesleyan scored
first as Sarah Wall connected on an assist from Laura Harper within eight
minutes. Calvin junior Jill Capel (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) met that goal
with less than two minutes in the second half off a pass from freshman Michelle
Koele (Denver, CO/Denver Christian).
Ohio Wesleyan again gained the lead in the second half as Jessie Seaver scored
and Alicia Grambeau gave out the assist. With a little more than three minutes
left in the game, Capel again drove one to the back of the net for her 21st
goal of the year. Junior Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) dished
out the assist, her 12th of the season. Capel ends her season at the top of
Calvin's list with 21 goals and 13 assists, while Weesies stands second with
a very close 20 goals and 12 assists.
Neither team was able to score in the overtimes, so the game is counted as a
tie. However, a shoot out was necessary to determine which team would advance
in the NCAA tournament.
Calvin head coach Mark Recker said, "I'm proud of my team for battling
back today. This is a tough result to swallow, but at the same time we proved
we could play with one of the top programs in country."
In the shootouts both teams were given five shooters a piece, Calvin scored on
its first four while senior goal keeper Linda Heilman (Byron Center/South
Christian) stopped Ohio Wesleyan's third penalty kick. Ohio Wesleyan then
converted their fourth and fifth shots, leaving Capel with a chance to win the
shoot out with the final kick. Her shot, strategically placed to the far
corner, was stopped on a sensational leaping grab by Gary, forcing continuation
of the shoot out. Ohio Wesleyan then converted their next three while Calvin
converted their next two. On Calivn's final attempt by freshman Elizabeth
Ribbens (Tinley Park, IL/Victor J. Andrew), Gary made another sensational save,
reaching back with her left hand to keep the ball from going into the net,
giving Ohio Weslean the shoot out victory and the advancement in the
tournament.
"Give their keeper a lot of credit," said Recker, "she made two great
saves in the shoot out. We had a chance to win, but she came up with a big
play."
Calvin ends their 2005 season with a record of 16-4-1.

taking the momentum back. Our serving was very good once again and I though we
did a good job of playing the match point-by-point."
