VOLLEYBALL

HOLLAND - For the sixth time in seven years, the Calvin women's volleyball
team is headed to the MIAA Tournament finals.

The Knights advanced to Saturday's MIAA Tournament final with a 30-18,
30-13, 31-29 victory over Alma Friday night at the Hope College Dow Center.
Calvin (27-8) will face rival Hope (27-7) in Saturday's final slated to start
at 4:00 p.m.

Hope advanced to the championship final with a 30-24, 27-30, 19-30, 30-27,
16-14 victory over Adrian in Friday's second semifinal match.

Calvin's victory over Alma (15-18) featured little drama until the third
game when the Knights fell behind 19-12 after rolling games one and two.
Calvin mounted a comeback, reeling off seven unanswered points to tie the game
at 19. Alma countered with the next two points to take a 21-19 lead but Calvin
came back with a three-point run to take its first lead of the game at 22-21.
With Calvin leading 27-26, Alma ripped off three straight points to build a
29-27 advantage and appeared ready to force a fourth game. Calvin senior
Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) followed with a clutch kill down the
middle and the Knights then benefited from an Alma hitting error that tied the
game at 29. The Knights then picked up a service ace and a kill to close the
match out in three games.

Hendricks led the Knights with 17 kills, 11 digs and an attack percentage of
.424. Junior Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA) was close behind with 14 kills
and an attack percentage of .414 while senior Katie Schultz (Escondido, CA) had
10 kills and nine digs.

Sophomore Molly Krikke (Greenwich, OH) chipped in with eight kills while
freshman libero Lauren DeGroot (Tulare, CA) had 16 digs and freshman defensive
specialist Stacie Lippert (St. Louis HS) 14 digs. Sophomore setter Katie
Zondervan (Lakewood, CA) tossed out 48 assists and in the process broke a
Calvin single-season record for assists, building her season total to 1,642
assists, breaking the previous record of 1,625 assists set by Sara Ahrenholz of
Prinsburg, Minnesota in 1999.

Calvin is now 15-3 in MIAA Tournament play including 6-1 in MIAA Tournament
semifinal matches. The Knights will be facing Hope for the fourth time in the
MIAA Tournament finals with Calvin holding a 2-1 record against Hope in the
finals.

Saturday's MIAA Tournament Final will be broadcast via RealAudio through the
Calvin web site at: http://www.calvin.edu/sports/ram/calvinsports.ram with Nick
Bolt calling all of the action.
