Volleyball Advances to MIAA Tournament Semis With Win over Tri-State

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Calvin 4, Alma 0

GRAND RAPIDS - Calvin kept pace with Hope for the MIAA lead as the Knights
handed visiting Alma a 4-0 shutout defeat Tuesday afternoon at Marvin A.
Zuidema Soccer Field.

With the victory, Calvin remains tied with Hope for first place in the MIAA
standings with identical 14-1-0 conference marks. Calvin will host Olivet on
Saturday at noon while Hope will host Kalamazoo at noon.

Now 15-3-1 overall, Calvin also reached the 15-win plateau for the first time
since 1998 with Tuesday's victory over Alma.

Despite a sluggish first half, Calvin held a 2-0 halftime lead behind first
half goals from junior Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo Christian HS) and freshman
Michelle Koele (Denver, CO). Weesies scored in the 11th minute of play,
tapping a shot into a wide-open Alma goal after a well-placed lead pass from
senior Kara Zuidema (Escondido, CA). The goal by Weesies was her team-leading
19th tally of the year.

Koele then gave Calvin a two-goal lead with 3:53 left in the half, knocking in
a corner kick struck by freshman Ashley Bolen (Urbana, IL).

Calvin picked up the pace in the second half, outshooting the Scots (4-14-1
overall, 3-12-0 MIAA) 21-0 over the final 45 minutes. Junior forward Jill
Capel (Unity Christian HS) used the momentum to garner her 17th goal of the
year just three-and-a-half minutes in, collecting a long chip from junior Laura
Rooks (Holland Christian HS) and whipping in a point-blank shot.

Calvin's fourth and final goal came via the hands of freshman Jessica Vegter
(Unity Christian HS) and the head of Koele as Vegter launched a sideline
throwin into the Alma box that Koele was able to head into the top shelf of the
Alma, just inside the near post. The goal was the seventh of the year for
Koele.

Calvin finished the game with a 29-2 shots at goal advantage. Senior
goalkeeper Linda Heilman (South Christian HS) picked up the victory for the
Knights, collecting her 13th shutout of the year and the 20th of her collegiate
career.
