CALVIN SPECIAL SPORTS REPORT FOR 9-24-05
LONGTIME CALVIN EDUCATOR/COACH DIES
One of the most notable figures in Calvin College athletics history has died.
Barney Steen, a longtime coach, professor and administrator in the Calvin
Physical Education Department passed away at the age of 85 Friday afternoon.
A native of New Jersey, Steen came to Calvin in 1953 just as the school was
entering the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
At Calvin, Steen served the Physical Education Department as a professor,
coach and athletics director. He retired from the department in 1983.
Among the sports that Steen coached at Calvin were men's cross country,
men's basketball, baseball, men's swimming and diving and men's golf.
He served as men's basketball coach from 1954-to-1966, compiling a won-loss
record of 187-86 (.685) that ranks second on the Calvin men's basketball list
for coaching victories. During his men's basketball coaching tenure, his
teams captured six MIAA titles. His 1960-61 MIAA Championship team went 20-0
and is the only unbeaten team in Calvin men's basketball history.
Funeral and visitation information will be released tomorrow. In addition, a
more in-depth release on Steen's time at Calvin will be released later this
weekend.
