Calvin Teams Receive MIAA Team GPA Award
A record nine Calvin College athletics teams have received the MIAA Team GPA Award. The award, presented by the Faculty Athletic Representatives of the MIAA member colleges recognizes conference athletic teams who achieved a 3.3 or better grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2004-05 academic year. Calvin teams that earned the award for the 2004-05 academic year include the men's and women's tennis teams, the women's cross country team, the women's golf team, the women's soccer team, the women's swimming and diving team, the women's track and field team and the women's volleyball team.
This is the seventh year the award has been presented.
Calvin's highest ranked team is its men's tennis team which posted a cumulative team GPA of 3.67 to rank third among the 41 teams honored among the MIAA member colleges. The Calvin men's tennis team was led by head coach John Ross who also doubles as the Calvin women's basketball coach. Ross' women's basketball team also earned the MIAA Team GPA award with a 3.32 grade point average.
Jerry Bergsma * who doubles as the Calvin women's tennis and women's golf coach * also saw both of his teams earn the MIAA Team GPA award as the Calvin women's tennis team posted a 3.59 grade point average to rank eighth among all MIAA teams while the Calvin women's golf team was ninth with a 3.58 grade point average. The women's golf team is receiving the award for the second straight year.
Honored for the seventh consecutive year is the Calvin women's cross country team. Under the direction of head coach Nancy Meyer, the women's cross country team compiled a team GPA of 3.47. The women's cross country team is one of five MIAA teams to have received the award every year since the award was initiated in 1998-99.
The Calvin women's track and field also earned the award for the fifth straight year as it posted a team GPA of 3.60 to rank sixth on the MIAA list. The Calvin women's track and field team was led this year by head coach Jong-Il Kim.
The women's soccer and women's volleyball team are receiving the award for the second time in three years. Coached by Amber Warners, the Calvin volleyball team posted a team GPA of 3.45. Coached by Mark Recker, the Calvin women's soccer team achieved a team GPA of 3.41.
Led by head coach Dan Gelderloos, the Calvin women's swimming and diving team is receiving the award for the first time as it achieved a team GPA of 3.33.
