CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR JULY 5, 2005
DETERS DENIED FIRST PROFESSIONAL VICTORY DESPITE STANDOUT EFFORT
BATAVIA, NY - Calvin College graduate Jim Deters continues to search for his
first professional baseball pitching victory but if last night's performance
against the Batavia Muckdogs was any indication, his first pro win will come
soon.
Pitching in front of a packed house at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia, New York,
Deters hurled five shutout innings against the host Muckdogs and allowed just
two hits. The Kalamazoo Christian High School graduate also struck out one
batter and walked one. Deters was in line to collect the pitching decision but
suffered a no decision as the bullpen of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers could
not hold the lead after his exit.
The Scrappers would eventually win the game in 10 innings to improve to 8-6 in
the New York-Penn League.
The Independence Day start by Deters marked his third appearance in a
Scrappers uniform. In three appearances, the Portage native is 0-1 with a 0.00
earned run average as he has not allowed an earned run in 13.1 innings of work.
Deters has also struck out five batters, walked three and allowed just six
hits. He currently leads the Mahoning Valley pitching staff in earned run
average and innings pitched.
The Mahoning Valley Scrappers are a short season Class A affiliate of the
Cleveland Indians. For more on Wednesday's victory over the Muckdogs, please
