BASEBALL

ADRIAN * Big Jim Deters got Calvin off on the right foot in the opener of a three-game weekend series at league-leading Adrian. Pitching under the lights of Adrian's Riverside Park, the 6-4 right-hander struck out 12 batters in leading Calvin (12-16 overall, 10-6 MIAA) to a 6-3 victory over the regionally-ranked Bulldogs (19-12 overall, 9-4 MIAA).

The pitching victory bumped the career pitching record of Deters (Kalamazoo Christian HS) to 24-6 and his MIAA career mark to 17-3. Deters is now tied for first place in the MIAA career list for victories (conference games only) with Olivet's Chris Gumper (1993-1996) and Albion's Eric Johnson (1993-1996). Deters is also now tied for fourth place on the MIAA career list for pitching decisions (20).

In addition, Deters has 284 career strikeouts overall as well as an MIAA-leading 199 career strikeouts in league play.

Calvin's victory Friday night allowed the Knights to stay in the MIAA title chase as they moved to within a game-and-a-half of the Bulldogs who still have two league series to play beyond its weekend set with Calvin. Hope (10-6 MIAA) also kept pace with Calvin as it defeated Tri-State 7-3 on Friday afternoon.

Ranked seventh in the latest Mideast Regional poll, Adrian jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the third but the Knights struck back with three runs in the top of the fourth, using a pair of wild pitches and an RBI groundout by junior catcher Mike Aggen (Evergreen Park, IL) to plate three runners.

In the top of the fifth, Calvin junior Kyle Snoeyink (Calvin Christian HS) led off with a triple and scored on another wild pitch to give the Knights a 4-3 lead. The lead would hold the remainder of the game with Calvin adding a pair of insurance runs with two outs in the top of the ninth.

The Calvin rally began when junior Mark Tigchelaar (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was hit by a pitch and continued with an infield single by senior Josh Vriesman (Denver, CO). Junior Tyler VanEps (Denver, CO) then delivered a clutch two-run RBI double to centerfield that gave Calvin a 6-3 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, Adrian's leadoff man reached base on a single but the Bulldogs were retired on two flyouts and a spectacular game-ending catch by VanEps at shortstop on a line drive headed to the outfield.

Calvin's offensive attack was paced by sophomore Mark Asma (Kalamazoo Christian HS) who went 3-for-5 at the plate and scored a run.

Calvin and Adrian are scheduled to face each other in a doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
