SOFTBALL
Calvin's scheduled softball doubleheader at Albion on Tuesday was rained out. The doubleheader will be made up on Wednesday beginning at 3:30 p.m.
BASEBALL
Calvin closed out its three-game series in disappointing fashion, falling to visiting Alma 8-6 Tuesday afternoon at Calvin Field.
The Knights (11-16 overall, 9-6 MIAA) are now tied for third place in the MIAA standings with rival Hope with Albion (10-5) a game ahead in second place while Adrian (9-3) stands alone in first place.
Calvin collected 14 hits in the loss but stranded 13 base runners. Meanwhile, Alma (8-11 overall, 8-7 MIAA) recorded 18 hits including seven in the first inning when the Scots jumped out a 5-0 lead off Calvin starter Jory Trim (Grand Rapids Creston HS).
Calvin battled back with two runs in the third as senior Josh Vriesman (Denver, CO) delivered a sacrifice fly and junior Mike Aggen (Evergreen Park, IL) an RBI double. Alma picked up a run in the sixth and another in the seventh however to take a 7-2 lead. Calvin junior Tyler VanEps (Denver, CO) gave the Knights a brief charge in the bottom of the seventh, belting his second home run of the spring. The homer was just a solo shot however and allowed Alma to maintain a four-run lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, Calvin erupted for three runs as sophomore Nick Caudle (Calvin Christian HS) led of the inning with his first home run of the season. With two outs, Aggen delivered a two-run RBI double into the right-field corner to bring the Knights within a run at 7-6. Aggen was left stranded at second base however and Alma picked up an insurance run in the top of the ninth as catcher Mike Zuehlke ripped a two-out solo homer to left.
Calvin placed one runner aboard in the bottom of the ninth but could do no further damage as Alma relief pitcher Brandon Shorter retired the side to pick up his third save of the year.
Wade Slavik (1-2) picked up the win for Alma, striking out four and walking two in 6.1 innings of work. Trim (3-4) took the loss for Calvin as he struck out two and walked one four innings with juniors Ben Buikema (Lakewood-Lake Odessa HS) and Kyle Snoeyink (Calvin Christian HS) also coming on in relief for the Knights.
Aggen led Calvin at the plate by going 4-for-5 with three RBI's to finish the three-game series with a .538 batting average (7-for-12). VanEps also went 3-for-5 while Caudle was 3-for-4.
Calvin returns to action Friday night when it travels to Adrian for a 6:00 p.m. game. Friday's game will be the opener of a three-game weekend series with the two teams scheduled for a Saturday doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. All three games will be played at Riverside Park in the city of Adrian.
