CALVIN SPORTS REPORT (PART ONE) FOR APRIL 23, 2005

BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL GAMES POSTPONED

Calvin's baseball and softball doubleheaders were postponed on Saturday because
of cold weather conditions.

 Calvin was scheduled to host Alma in a baseball doubleheader on Saturday. The
doubleheader will be made up on Monday with the first game starting at 2:00
p.m. The series was originally scheduled to begin on Friday with a single
nine-inning game but that game was also postponed because of weather
conditions. Friday's single nine-inning game will be made up on Tuesday next
week beginning at 4:00 p.m.

In softball, Calvin was scheduled to travel to Albion for a doubleheader on
Saturday. That doubleheader will be made up next Tuesday beginning at 3:30
p.m.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

YPSILANTI -- Battling cold, wet and windy conditions, the Calvin men's and
women's track and field teams posted several sterling performances Friday night
at the Eastern Michigan Invitational.

On the men's side, Calvin's distance group had a strong night. Senior Aaron
Iverson (Radnor, OH) led the way by winning the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a
career-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 9:18.46. Iverson was
part of a 1-4 Calvin finish as junior Harrison Jorritsma (Beamsville, ON) was
fourth in 9:41.54.

In the 5,000 meters, sophomore Tim Finnegan (Los Alamos, NM and senior Kris
Koster (Grand Rapids Christian HS) had career-best efforts as Finnegan took
third in 14:41.89 while Koster was fourth in 14:40.00. Both times were NCAA
III provisional qualifying performances.

In the 1,500 meters, senior Jeff Engbers (Whitinsville, MA) was 15th with a
season-best time of 3:55.64.

Field events were also a strength as junior Nate Meckes (Bay City) won the
discus (175-6) and shot put (57-1). His winning throw in the discus was the
third-best winning effort of his career. In the triple jump, junior Tim Zwiers
(Pella, IA) took third with a jump of 44-0 1/2.

In the women's competition, sophomore Lydia Singer (Wilmington, DE) had a huge
performance in the 5,000 meters as she took fourth with a career-best time of
18:02.52, more than 38 seconds off her previous career best effort. Sophomore
teammate Melissa Vanden Berg (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was also huge, taking
14th with a career-best time of 18:33.26, taking more than 50 seconds off her
previous career-best time. In the 3,000 meters, sophomore Laura Holtrop
(Derwood, MD) had a career-best time of 10:48.99 in taking 16th place. Junior
Camille Medema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was also solid in taking seventh in
the 800 meters with a time of 2:18.45.

Moving over to the field events, junior Kim Vanderzee (Shoreline, WA) tied for
second with a jump of 5-5 with sophomore Katie Bolt (Grand Rapids Christian HS)
finishing in a tie for fourth with a jump of 5-3.

In the shot put, the 1-2 Calvin punch of senior Lisa Nanninga (Grand Rapids
Christian HS) continued to produce big results as Nanninga took second (45-4
3/4) while sophomore Megann VanderVliet (Oakville, ON) took third with a
career-best and strong NCAA III provisional qualifying mark of 44- 11 3/4.
VanderVliet's throw puts her sixth on the NCAA III shot put list. Nanninga is
already second with a throw of 46-11.

In the sprints, senior Sue Abbring (Highland, IN) delivered a pair of top 10
individual finishes as she took ninth in the 200 meters (25.00) and fourth in
the 400 meters (56.92). Her time in the 400 was a season-best and NCAA III
provisional qualifying time. Sophomore Lisa Winkle (South Christian HS)
follwed close behind with a sixth place time of 58.61.

Calvin's 4x400 meter relay capped off the meet by taking first place with a
strong NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 3:53.55 that is currently third
on the NCAA III performance list. Calvin's relay consisted of sophomore Katie
VanderLaan (Grand Rapids Christian HS), Winkle, freshman Sarah Wittingen (East
Grand Rapids HS) and Abbring.

Both Calvin teams will now break for a week and prepare for the upcoming
Hillsdale Relays.
