CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 15, 2005

BASEBALL

Jim Deters added another chapter to his fabulous Calvin baseball career on Friday afternoon as the 6-4 right-hander struck out 20 batters in recording an 11-2 complete-game victory over visiting Olivet Friday afternoon at Calvin Field.

The victory allowed Calvin (9-12 overall) to remain a game behind league-leading Adrian as the Knights improved to 7-3 in the MIAA, one game behind the league-leading Bulldogs (8-2 MIAA) which defeated Albion Friday night. Calvin is now tied for second place in the MIAA standings with Albion while remaining two games in front of fourth place Hope (5-5).

Deters matched his own MIAA single-game record for strikeouts in the process while improving to 4-1 on the season. A graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School, Deters carried a perfect game through seven innings as he struck out 16 of a possible 21 batters without allowing a ball to be hit out of the infield.

Olivet (15-11, 4-6 MIAA) broke up the perfect game in the top of the eighth as Nick McIntosh led off the inning with an infield single. Olivet would go on to score two runs in the inning, using three hits and two Calvin errors to break up the shutout bid by Deters.

The game was well in hand by that point however as the Knights had taken an 8-0 lead, breaking the game open with five runs in the fifth. Calvin collected five hits and capitalized on two Olivet errors in the fifth-inning uprising with junior Mike Aggen (Evergreen Park, IL) collecting a two-run RBI single and sophomore Nick Caudle (Calvin Christian HS) delivering a two-run RBI double. Caudle finished the game with three RBI's.

Aggen would finish the afternoon with two hits in five trips to the plate while collecting four RBI's. Aggen now has a team-leading .358 batting average along with a team-leading 17 runs batted in.

Aggen was one of five Calvin players that recorded multiple-hit games Friday. Sophomore Mark Tigchelaar (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was 3-for-4, raising his batting average to .319. Also collecting two hits apiece were sophomore Mark Asma (Kalamazoo Christian HS), junior Kyle Hollemans (East Kentwood HS) and Caudle. Both of Caudle's hits were doubles.

As a Calvin pitcher, Deters is now 22-6 in his career with 267 strikeouts. He is the Calvin career leader in victories and strikeouts. In MIAA play, Deters now has a won-loss record of 15-3 with 182 strikeouts. He is the MIAA career leader in strikeouts and is tied for third place on the MIAA career list for pitching victories. After Friday, Deters also has 142.1 innings of work to his credit in MIAA play which ranks him fifth on the MIAA career list.

Calvin and Olivet will resume the series on Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
