CALVIN SPORTS REPORT (PART TWO) FOR MARCH 18, 2005
MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
HOLLAND * Calvin senior Peter Boumgarden added another All-America finish to his mantle of collegiate honors as he took seventh in the 100 butterfly at the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships Friday night at the Holland Aquatic Center.
Boumgarden clocked in with a time of 50.26, allowing him to claim NCAA III All-America honors in the event for the fourth straight year. The All-America berth is also the 10th of Boumgarden's collegiate career.
The finish by Boumgarden was good for 12 points in the team standings, putting Calvin in 32nd place.
A native of Naperville, Illinois, Boumgarden also swam in the prelims of the 100 backstroke Friday morning and just missed a spot in the consolation finals as he took 18th with a 52.46.
Boumgarden is scheduled to compete in the prelims of the 100 freestyle Saturday morning.
BASEBALL
FORT MYERS, FL * Calvin dropped a pair of games to Brockport State on Friday to fall to 2-5 on the year. Calvin dropped its opener to Brockport 8-1 and then suffered a 14-4 defeat in the nightcap.
In game one, Brockport State jumped out to a 6-0 lead through two innings and never looked back. Junior Tim Stoeffler (St. Joseph) took the loss for the Knights to fall to 0-2 on the year. Stoeffler went through 5.1 innings of work and struck out three and walked three while allowing nine hits. Junior Joel Bont (Calvin Christian HS) came on later in relief.
Calvin picked up six hits with junior Kyle Holleman (East Kentwood HS) picking up two of the hits.
In game two, junior Jory Trim (Grand Rapids Creston HS) took the loss to fall to 1-1 on the year. Junior Ben Buikema (Lakewood-Lake Odessa HS) and freshman Aaron Davis all came on in relief.
The two teams combined for 27 hits with Calvin collecting 10 and Brockport State 17. Calvin was led at the plate by junior Mike Aggen (Evergreen Park, IL) and sophomores Mike Asma (Kalamazoo Christian HS) and Eric Boer who all collected two hits apiece.
Boer ripped a three-run homer for the Knights for his second round-tripper of the spring.
Calvin closes out its swing through Florida on Saturday when it faces Denison at 9:00 a.m.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TENNIS
HILTON HEAD, SC -- The Calvin men's and women's tennis teams picked up a handful of victories on Thursday and Friday after battling stormy weather on Wednesday that postponed several matches.
On the women's side, Calvin picked up 9-0 victories over Russell Sage College and Shepherd College to improve to 4-2 on the year.
On the men's side, Calvin picked up three victories, defeating Colby-Sawyer 6-1, Philadelphia Bible College 7-0 and St. Scholastica 9-0. The Calvin men are now 5-1 on the year and have one match remaining in Hilton Head as the Knights will face Nebraska Wesleyan Saturday morning before heading home to Grand Rapids.
