CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 19

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

ALBION-With a 74-60 victory at nationally-ranked Albion College, Calvin has
created a three-way tie for first place in the MIAA women's basketball race.

The victory over the 19th-ranked Britons (15-2 overall, 7-1 MIAA) allowed
Calvin (13-2 overall, 7-1 MIAA) and Hope to pull into a tie for first place
with Albion in the MIAA standings as all three teams are 7-1 in league play.
The last time these two teams met was last season when Albion upset Calvin in
the championship of the MIAA tournament, ending Calvin's 21 game winning
streak. Tonight, Calvin stretched its winning streak to 11 games and halted
Albion's at 13 games.

Both teams came out red hot in the first half, trading baskets on each of the
first two possessions. Calvin was then able to go on a seven point run to go
up 11-4 with under 17:00 left in the half. Sophomore Lisa Winkle(South
Christian) and senior Lesa Holleman(Chandler, MN) scored four points each in
the first few minutes. Albion was able to stay in the game on the effort by
sophomore Ruth Sventickas, who had 13 points in the first half. Winkle picked
up her second foul midway through the first half and was replaced by her sister
Sarah Winkle(South Christian), who chipped in with six first half points.
Calvin went to the locker room at halftime with a 35-31 advantage. Holleman
was the star of the first half for the Knights as she scored 10 points and
pulled down six boards.

The second half started out much the same as the first had. Lisa Winkle and
Ruth Sventickas traded baskets back and forth and a three pointer by Kellyn
Glynn pulled Albion to within two points at 44-42 with under 15:00 remaining.
Freshman Lindsay Peuler(Grandville) answered right back for Calvin by hitting a
three and then a basket by senior Rita Ouwinga(McBain Christian) with under
seven minutes to play matched Calvin's largest lead at 57-50. The Knights
then went on 17-10 run to end the game which was highlighted by a three point
play by junior Sarah Winkle and two jumpers from Ouwinga.

Calvin was led in scoring by Holleman, who had 16 points and also grabbed
eight rebounds and served up eight assists. Lisa Winkle had 13 points and four
rebounds and Sarah Winkle had 12 points and six rebounds. Kristin McDonald was
also in double digits, scoring 10 and she had seven assists. Ouwinga finished
with eight points and Peuler with seven for the Knights.

Sventickas led all scorers with 20 points for Albion. Sarah Caskey added 18
points and seven assists for the Britons.

Calvin will now try to break the tie for first when the host Hope this
Saturday evening at 7:30. Hope is the only team in the MIAA to defeat Calvin
this season, winning 60-50, December 1. Coach John Ross knows this game was
important, but that his team has another one coming.

"This was a big win because it puts us where we want to be which is in first
place," said Ross. "This win won't mean much though if we don't come back with
the same kind of effort Saturday night. We'll need the same effort on Saturday
night that we gave against Albion to have a chance against an outstanding Hope
College team."
