CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR DECEMBER 31, 2004

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

WEST PALM BEACH, FL * Calvin will roll into the new year with an 8-2 overall record and a six-game win streak after recording an 85-56 victory over Wesley College (DE) at the Sailfish Shootout Friday afternoon on the campus of Palm Beach Atlantic College.

Calvin broke the game open with an 11-0 first half run that enabled the Knights to build a 22-10 lead. Calvin would maintain a double-digit lead from that point, holding a 42-22 halftime lead and leading by as many as 35 points in the second half.

Senior guard Kristen McDonald (West Catholic HS) continued her hot shooting in the sunny climes of Florida as she connected on six of eight from the floor including three of four from beyond the arc to finish with a team-high 19 points along with six assists and three steals. During the two-day tournament, McDonald connected on 13 of 19 field goal attempts including seven of nine from beyond the long line.

The sister tandem of Lisa and Sarah Winkle (South Christian HS) also proved to be a potent threat for Calvin in the win over Wesley as Lisa Winkle scored 18 points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished out five assists and blocked one shot and collected a steal in only 20 minutes of action. Older sister Sarah Winkle provided a career-high 12 points off the bench on six of nine shooting.

Seniors Lesa Holleman (Chandler, MN) and Lisa Nanninga (Grand Rapids Christian HS) added seven points apiece while senior Rita Ouwinga (McBain Christian HS) chipping in with six points, three assists and three steals.

Wesley College (5-4) was led in defeat by T'Neisha Turner who tallied a game-high 23 points while Tricia Casarotto racked up a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards.

Calvin held a 44-39 rebounding edge and held Wesley to 33.3 percent field goal shooting while connecting on 50 percent (35 of 70) of its own field goal attempts. Calvin also hit on 10 of 14 attempts from the charity stripe for a 71.4 percent free throw clip.

In addition, Calvin collected 17 steals with Wesley College committing 24 turnovers.

Calvin will now prepare for a busy slate of conference action as the Knights will play in three MIAA games next week, hosting Tri-State Tuesday at 7:30; traveling to St. Mary's on Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. contest and then hosting Kalamazoo Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
