CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR DECEMBER 30, 2004 (PART ONE)

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

WEST PALM BEACH, FL * Calvin opened play at the Sailfish Shootout hosted by Palma Beach Atlantic College with a 64-53 victory over Mount St. Joseph (OH) Thursday afternoon to up its record to 7-2.

The victory over the Lions (5-5) extended Calvin's win streak to five games heading into a Friday afternoon matchup against Wesley College of Delaware.

Calvin held control throughout Thursday's contest with Mount St. Joseph as the Knights led 37-17 at halftime and extended their lead to 25 points at 52-27 early in the second half.

Calvin held a 61-41 lead with just over three minutes remaining but Mount St. Joseph was able to outscore Calvin's reserves 12-3 over the final 2:10 to close the final margin to 11 points.

All 13 of Calvin's players broke into the scoring column and received at least eight minutes of playing time.

Senior guard Kristen McDonald (West Catholic HS) led the Knights with 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting including 4-of-5 from beyond the three-point arc. Senior Sarah Bussis (Unity Christian HS) came off the bench to score a career-high nine points while swishing the first three-point basket of her varsity career.

Sophomore Lisa Winkle (South Christian HS) also had a strong game in limited playing time as she notched seven points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists while sophomore Lesa Holleman (Chandler, MN) added six points and five assists.

Senior Lisa Nanninga (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had a strong game with five points, 10 rebounds and three steals as Calvin held a 37-31 rebounding edge.

Krystal Clark led Mount St. Joseph in defeat with 15 points while Emily Day chipped in with 13 points.

The game was plagued with turnovers as the two teams combined for a whopping 68 turnovers with Mount St. Joseph committing 35 and Calvin 33.

Calvin's game against Wesley College is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. in West Palm Beach.
