CALVIN WEEKEND SPORTS WRAP-UP FOR DECEMBER 3-4

MEN'S BASKETBALL

For the first time in his collegiate career, Calvin junior Kyle Trewhella has been named MIAA Player of the Week in men's basketball. A native of Rockford and a graduate of Rockford High School, Trewhella shares the award this week with Alma sophomore Anthony Jones.

Trewhella scored 51 points this past week in helping Calvin win two of three games. Over the course of the week, he was 19 of 29 from the floor, 6-of-10 at the free throw line and 7-of-13 from three-point range. He also had eight assists.

In a 76-64 victory over Aquinas Tuesday night, Trewhella pumped in a team-high 21 points. He followed with 18 points in a 91-87 overtime loss at nationally-ranked Wheaton Friday night. On Saturday, he tallied 12 points in an 83-82 overtime victory over 21st-ranked Carthage College. Trewhella scored eight of his 12 points in overtime including the game-winning field goal with just 4.6 seconds left that allowed the Knights to take a one-point lead. Trewhella also connected on both of his three-point attempts in overtime.

Calvin is currently 5-3 on the season and returns to action on Wednesday night when it journeys to Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Illinois. The non-conference game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. (EST). The Calvin-Trinity Christian matchup will again pit the Knights up again former Calvin assistant coach Tim Walker who is now the head coach of the Trinity Christian men's basketball team.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

YPSILANTI * A strong second-day effort allowed the Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams to move up one place and finish among the top five teams at the Eastern Michigan Invitational on Saturday.

In the men's competition, Calvin placed third in the seven-team field with 450.5 points, a point-and-a-half ahead of MIAA rival Kalamazoo which took fourth with 449 points. On the women's side, Calvin edged out Kalamazoo for fifth place, scoring 377 points with Kalamazoo compiling 362 points.

Host Eastern Michigan captured the men's competition with a commanding total of 1,316 points while the University of Michigan came back to overtake host Eastern Michigan on the final day, finishing with 1,091 points while the host Eagles tallied a second place score of 976 points.

In the women's meet, Calvin received a handful of NCAA conditional qualifying performances including one automatic qualifying effort.

The automatic qualifying effort came from sophomore Rebekah Weima (Grand Rapids Christian HS) as she took second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:52.37. She also took second in the 500 freestyle with a strong NCAA III conditional qualifying time of 5:03.31.

Weima also anchored Calvin's 800 meter freestyle relay that clocked in with an NCAA III conditional qualifying time of 7:51.00. She was joined on the relay by junior Abby Johnson (Grand Haven HS), freshman Stephanie Duncan (Long Grove, IL) and junior Lynn Visser (Jenison HS).

Johnson also picked up NCAA III conditional qualifying times in the 200 and 400 IM events, clocking in with a time of 2:10.99 in the 200 IM and a time of 4:37.37 in the 400 IM. Johnson's time in the 400 IM was good for fifth place and she was followed by sophomore teammate Alex Wilson Ellsworth, OH) who took seventh in a season-best time of 4:48.16. Wilson also had a season-best time of 2:16.20 in taking eighth place in the 200 IM.

Duncan also had a strong effort in taking sixth in the 200 freestyle with a season-best time of 1:56.79 while adding a season-best effort of 5:24.93 in the 500 freestyle that was good for 16th place.

In the men's competition, senior Peter Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) led the way by taking second in the 100 butterfly with a strong NCAA III conditional qualifying tie of 50.75. Boumgarden was one of three Calvin swimmers to land in the top 10 in the event as younger brother John Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) was seventh in 54.53 and senior Peter Daining (Grand Rapids Christian HS) 10th in 56.26.

Peter Boumgarden added a seventh place time of 1:58.30 in the 200 IM and anchored Calvin's 800 freestyle relay team that clocked a season-best time of 7:07.34. He was joined on the relay by sophomore Peter Tuuk (Grand Rapids Christian HS), junior Luke Bagnall (Marshalltown, IA) and freshman Andrew Resseguie (Holland Christian HS).

Tuuk and Resseguie produced top-10 finishes in the 200 freestyle with season-best times as Tuuk was seventh in 1:47.00 and Resseguie ninth in 1:47.93. Bagnall also had a strong meet, placing 10th in the 400 IM with a season-best time of 4:18.94 and ninth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:54.61.

Freshman John Boumgarden added an eighth place time of 22.58 in the 50 freestyle while Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team of Tuuk, senior Andy Mulder (Holland Christian HS), sophomore Matt Herrema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Andrew Bolles (West Ottawa HS) took fifth in 1:29.16.

Calvin's 200 medley relay team of Peter Boumgarden, Bagnall, Tukk and John Boumgarden also sparkled, taking third with a season-best time of 1:38.12.

Both Calvin teams will now prepare for first semester exams and then head down to Florida shortly after Christmas for a week of training.

Both Calvin teams return to action on January 15 when they compete in non-conference dual meets at Wayne State University.
