WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Calvin defeated Aquinas, 80-66, Tuesday night at the Calvin Fieldhouse
in its home opener.
The Knights (2-1) came out strong, dominating the tip-off and converting its first
two shots. Aquinas (5-2) battled back with a pair of three-pointers to
tie the game. After that, the Knights stayed on top the entire game.
Calvin held a 39-34 halftime edge and widened its lead to 16 points at 66-50 with 7:42 remaining. Aquinas would creep to within seven at 71-64 with 1:19 remaining but would get no closer as the Knights held on for the win.
"It was very good for a home opener," said head coach John Ross. "Our
kids did a really good job."
Sophomore Lisa Winkle [South Christian HS] scored a game high 23 points and
grabbed 10 rebounds, her sixth career double-double. Winkle also led
the team with three steals. Senior Kristen McDonald [Grand Rapids West Catholic HS] put
up 21 points on the board, and dished out a team-high seven assists. Senior Rita Ouwinga (McBain Christian HS) also had a strong game with 13 points including a 9 for 10 showing at the free throw line.
In addition junior Sarah Winkle [South Christian HS] brought down nine rebounds.
Calvin finished the game with a 49-25 rebounding edge. The Knights
connected at the charity stripe as well, making 77.4% of the shots as
opposed to the 60.9% from the Saints. Calvin entered Tuesday's game shooting just 63 percent from the free throw line.
"It was a good win to take into the Thanksgiving break," said Ross.
The Knights return to action Wednesday, December 1, at Hope, at 7:30
p.m.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
BIG RAPIDS * Calvin suffered its first defeat of the year, falling 97-85 in a shootout at non-conference rival Ferris State Tuesday night at the Jim Wink Arena.
Calvin (2-1) stayed with the host Bulldogs (3-0) for the first 13 minutes of the first half as the Knights trailed by just two at 30-28 but Ferris State would roll off a 24-16 run over the final seven minutes to take a 54-44 halftime lead.
Calvin made periodic runs at Ferris State in the second half, closing to within six at 58-52 and to within seven on two occasions inside the final 10 minutes but the Knights were never able to get over the jump as the Bulldogs were able to close out the win.
Calvin was led in defeat by junior guard Kyle Trewhella (Rockford HS) who poured in a career-high 25 points on 8 of 17 shooting including 6 of 11 from beyond the arc. Senior Dan Aultman (Mason County Central HS) was next on the Calvin scoring list with 19 points while also grabbing seven rebounds. Senior point guard Ricky Shilts (Kalamazoo Central HS) also had a big game with 11 points and a career-high 10 assists with junior Andy Draayer (Denver, CO) adding 10 points off the bench. Sophomore Jock Meckes (Bay City) also made his presence felt with a career-high 10 rebounds and five blocked shots.
Ferris State placed five players in double figures in scoring however with senior Carlton Epps popping in 22 points as he surpassed the 1,000 point plateau for his career. Willie Burrel was next with 20 points with point guard Dennis Springs contributing 15 points, nine assists and four rebounds. Tyler Wolfe contributed 14 points off the bench while Terrance Shaw had 12 points and seven boards for the Bulldogs.
"I thought we played hard and competed well," said Calvin men's basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek. "The thing that hurt us was our rebounding in the first half. We didn't control the glass enough in the first 20 minutes and Ferris State took advantage of it. I thought we did a much better job of rebounding the basketball in the second half."
Ferris State held a 43-42 rebounding edge overall including a 19-18 edge in the first half. Of its 19 first half rebounds, 10 were offensive boards as the Bulldogs scored 13 second chance points in the opening 20 minutes.
Calvin finished with a 45.2 percent shooting clip and connected on 8 of 20 (.400) from three-point range and 21 of 30 (.700) from the charity stripe.
Ferris State shot 46.3 percent from the floor including a blistering 52 percent (13 of 25) clip from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs also swished 10 of 15 attempts (.667) at the free throw line.
Calvin returns to action on Friday when it faces cross-town rival Aquinas at 2:00 p.m. in a first round game of the Select Bank Classic at the Van Andel Arena. Hope will face Cornerstone at noon in the opening first round game Friday with Friday's winners meeting in the championship game Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. and the losers facing off in the consolation game Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
