CALVIN WOMEN'S SOCCER PLAYERS RECEIVE ALL-MIAA HONORS
The All-MIAA women's soccer teams have been released and five Calvin players
have been so honored.
Receiving first team honors from Calvin are sophomores Jill Capel, Sarah
Weesies and Tricia DeVries.
Named to the second team from Calvin are senior Linnea Butler and junior Kara
Zuidema.
Capel and Weesies are making their second straight appearances on the All-MIAA
first team while DeVries is receiving first team accolades for the first time.
A forward from Hudsonville who graduated from Unity Christian High School,
Capel led the MIAA in scoring this fall with 19 goals, 14 assists and 51
points. Her point total is the fifth-highest total in MIAA single-season
history while her goal total is the sixth-best and her assist total the
third-best.
During the year, Capel was named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week once and
notched one hat trick. Of her 19 goals in conference games, four were
game-winners.
Also a forward, Weesies took second in the MIAA scoring race with 16 goals,
eight assists and 40 points. A native of Kalamazoo and a graduate of Kalamazoo
Christian High School, Weesies picked up one hat trick in league play this year
and scored five game-winning goals.
A sweeper back, DeVries is from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of Grand Rapids
Christian High School. DeVries keyed a Calvin defense that posted six shutout
victories in league play this fall.
Butler is receiving All-MIAA second team honors for the second straight year.
She is from Shelton, Washington and is a graduate of Capital High School.
Butler served as both a midfielder and defensive back this fall. In league
play, she scored a goal and picked up two assists.
Zuidema is from Escondido, California and is a graduate of Escondido Calvin
Christian High School. A midfielder, Zuidema chalked up a career-high 10 goals
in league play this season and finished tied for eighth in the league scoring
race with 20 points.
Also receiving honorable mention recognition from the MIAA coaches are senior
stopper back Kristen Carlson (Encinitas, CA/Santa Fe Christian HS), sophomore
midfielder Leah Scholten (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) and junior marking
back Karla VanBeveren (Ancaster, ON/Hamilton District Christian HS).
Calvin finished the 2004 season with a 14-5-1 overall record and in second
place in the MIAA standings with a 13-2-1 conference mark, one point behind
league champion Hope (13-1-2).
In recording 14 victories this fall, Calvin reached the double-digit plateau in
wins for the 16th straight year.
