CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR NOVEMBER 4, 2004
CALVIN SOCCER PLAYERS RECEIVE ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT HONORS FROM COSIDA
Three Calvin College soccer players have received academic all-district IV
honors from the College Sports Information Director's Association of
America.
On the men's side, Calvin senior Joel Veldhouse has been named to the CoSIDA
Academic All-District IV first team for the second straight year. He is now
eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. Last year, Veldhouse was
named a first team CoSIDA Academic All-American.
A native of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Veldhouse carries a 3.79 grade point
average in biochemistry. He will graduate in December and plans to attend
medical school next fall.
On the soccer pitch, Veldhouse is in the midst of a standout senior campaign
as he has collected 19 goals, nine assists and 47 points on the year. A
two-time All-MIAA first team selection, a two-time Great Lakes All-Region pick
and the MIAA's MVP in 2002 Veldhouse is part of a Calvin men's soccer team
that is 17-1-1 overall and ranked eighth nationally. The Knights will host
rival Hope on Saturday in a showdown for the MIAA title with both teams tied
for the league lead at 12-1-0 in conference play.
On the women's side, Calvin senior Kristen Carlson and sophomore Sarah
Weesies have both been selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District IV second
team.
Carlson is from Encinitas, California and is a graduate of Santa Fe Christian
High School. A stopper back on defense, Carlson has been a four-year member of
the Calvin women's soccer team and a three-year starter in the defensive
backfield. Carlson was a first team All-MIAA and third team Great Lakes
All-Region choice in 2002. She carries a 3.71 grade point average while
majoring in philosophy and studio art. She plans to attend graduate school in
the future.
Weesies is just a sophomore and is from Kalamazoo. A graduate of Kalamazoo
Christian High School, Weesies has already made a big impact on the Calvin
women's soccer team as she was named the MIAA's MVP last fall - becoming
the first freshman in MIAA women's soccer history to receive the award. She
was then named to the Great Lakes All-Region third team after scoring 20 goals
and matching a Calvin single-season record with 14 assists. This fall, Weesies
has scored 16 goals and collected eight assists for a total of 40 points.
Weesies carries a 3.66 grade point average and is majoring in exercise science
with plans to become an athletics trainer. This past year, she was named to
the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and was a two-time member of the Calvin Dean's
List.
A two-time MIAA Offensive Player of the Week, Weesies will make a homecoming
on Saturday when Calvin travels to Kalamazoo for a conference match slated to
start at noon. Calvin is currently 13-5-1 overall and 12-2-1 in the MIAA, one
point behind league-leading Hope in the conference standings.
