WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
For the sixth straight year, Calvin is headed to the MIAA Tournament
semi-finals after defeating St. Mary's Tuesday night at the Calvin Fieldhouse.
The number two seeded Knights (25-8 overall) eliminated the
Seventh-seeded Belles (6-19) in three games, 30-20, 30-19, 30-19.
Calvin will face third-seeded Kalamazoo (17-7) Friday night in an MIAA
Tournament semifinal game at 5:30 p.m. The match will be held at Alma's
Cappaert Gymnasium with top-seeded Alma scheduled to face fourth-seeded Hope in
a second semifinal match Friday night at 7:30 p.m. Kalamazoo defeated Albion
in three games in a first round match Tuesday night with Alma sweeping Olivet
and Hope topping Adrian in four games in the two remaining first round
matches.
Friday's winners will meet in the championship final Saturday afternoon at
4:00 p.m. with Alma College serving as host.
In its victory over St. Mary's, the Knights started slow, but after the
jitters were out, Calvin had a six-point scoring spree. The Belles kept
battling, but the Knights managed a couple four-point runs. The Belles tried
to sneak in a short run, but the Knights quickly answered back. The Knights
won, 30-20.
Calvin captured three-point lead at the beginning of game two, but St.
Mary's stole it back with a two point lead. As soon as the Belles
pulled ahead, the Knights took action with a 12-2 run. The Knights
sealed the second win, 30-19.
St.Mary's started strong, taking a four point lead for the first half of
the game. The Knights scored 10 consecutive points, the longest run of
the match. St. Mary's managed to score a few points before Calvin took
another 9-2 run. The Belles couldn't battle back, and the Knights won, 30-19.
"I'm relieved. We played pretty well. We made few and fewer errors as the
games went on," said Warners. "We came to play."
Senior Kara Kuipers [Hudsonville], averaging 3.74 kills and 1.59 blocks
per game, led the team with 20 kills and three blocks tonight. Junior
Christine Hendricks [Cincinnati, Ohio] put down 14 kills. They were
fed by freshman Katie Zondervan [Cerritos, Cal.] who compiled 52 set
assists. Senior Kristin DeGroot [Tulare, Cal] averages 5.01
digs-per-game, and she dug up 20 kill attempts tonight. Junior Katie
Schultz [Escondido, Cal.] followed with 14 digs.
For the Belles, junior Shelly Bender had eight kills and three blocks,
and senior Elise Rupright had five kills. Freshman Stephanie Bauer set
11 assists and freshman Elizabeth Stohl had 10. Junior Michelle Turley
dug up 13 kill attempts and freshman Amanda David chalked up 10.
The win tonight not only advances Calvin in the MIAA tournament, but
also marks the 100th collegiate career victory for head coach Amber
Warners.
Now in her fourth year as a collegiate head coach, Warners is 100-34 for a
sparkling winning percentage of .746. Warners is 79-23 in three years as head
coach at Calvin. She also compiled a 21-11 record as the head interim coach at
Hope during the 1994 season.
"I had no clue," said Warners when the milestone was announced after the
match. "I was like, 'It's not my birthday,
what's up?'"
In order to prepare for the next game, Warners said the team will work
more on defense and their defensive game.
"I thought we did really well at the net," said Warners. "We'll
maintain a little bit, but it's not a whole lot different."
Friday's match against Kalamazoo will be broadcast via RealAudio
(www.Calvin.edu/sports) with the broadcast set to begin at 5:25 p.m.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
With one game left in the regular season, Calvin is still alive in the MIAA
title chase but will need help to win the crown.
The Knights remain a point behind league-leading Hope after a 3-0 victory over
Adrian Tuesday afternoon at Calvin Field but Hope also kept up the pace with a
6-1 triumph over Kalamazoo Tuesday.
Calvin will travel to Kalamazoo on Saturday while Hope will journey to Alma
with both games slated to start at noon. Hope can capture its second straight
league title with a win at Alma while Calvin must defeat Kalamazoo and hope for
a Hope loss or tie against Alma.
A year ago, Calvin finished second behind Hope ironically by just one point.
In its win over Adrian Tuesday afternoon on a dark and gloomy day at Calvin
Field, the Knights did all of their scoring in a span of six minutes midway
through the first half.
Junior Kara Zuidema (Escondido, CA) put the Knights on the board with a goal
in the 25th minute with sophomore Leah Scholten (Unity Christian HS) drawing an
assist on the play with a back pass. The goal was the ninth of the year for
Zuidema - marking a single-season high for the Southern California native.
Calvin struck for its second goal two minutes later with sophomore Jill Capel
(Unity Christian HS) blasting a shot into the top shelf of the Adrian goal for
her team-leading 21st goal of the year. Sophomore Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo
Christian HS) picked up an assist on the play as she beat two defenders up the
right wing and delivered pass with pace through the goalmouth that Capel was
able to one-time.
Weesies then chalked up her 16th goal of the year four minutes later on a
blast in the box with Scholten picking up her second assist of the game on the
play.
Scholten currently has nine assists on the year - also a new single-season
high for the Hudsonville native.
With her goal Tuesday afternoon, Capel brought her league scoring total to 51
points, matching the fifth-best single-season scoring total in MIAA women's
soccer history. Capel also has 19 goals in league play which matches the
sixth-best single-season total in MIAA women's soccer history.
Calvin finished with a 33-5 shots at goal advantage and could have won by a
wider margin if not for the strong play of Adrian goalkeeper Reshia Jamieon who
collected 11 saves, several of which were in one-on-one confrontations with
Calvin attackers.
Calvin junior goalkeeper Linda Heilman (South Christian HS) was also strong
for the Knights, recording three saves in picking up her sixth shutout victory
of the season.
