SPORTS REPORT FOR OCTOBER 31, 2004
MEN'S SOCCER
For the third time this year and for the sixth time in his collegiate career,
Calvin College senior Joel Veldhouse has been named MIAA Offensive Player of
the Week in men's soccer. Veldhouse shares the award this week with Hope
junior Devin McNeil.
A native of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and a graduate of Sioux Falls Christian
High School, Veldhouse scored three goals and picked up two assists last week
as the Knights defeated Kalamazoo 1-0 in double overtime and Olivet 4-0.
In Calvin's 1-0 win over Kalamazoo Tuesday afternoon, Veldhouse assisted on
the only goal of the game as he set up teammate David Holwerda with just 3:57
left in the second overtime session.
In Saturday's victory at Olivet, Veldhouse notched his third hat trick of
the season including the fourth of his collegiate career while also picking up
one assist as the Knights improved to 16-1-1 overall.
Veldhouse currently has 18 goals and eight assists on the year for a total of
44 points which leads the Knights in scoring.
Veldhouse also leads the MIAA in scoring with 36 points on the strength of 14
goals and eight assists.
Ranked 17th in the latest Division III Top-25 poll, Calvin is currently three
points behind league-leading Hope in the MIAA standings as the Knights are
11-1-0 in conference play while Hope is 12-0. Calvin will host Tri-State on
Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. in a conference match and will then host Hope on
Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY NOTE
In the second edition of Saturday's sports report, it was noted that the
Calvin men's cross country team captured its 17th straight MIAA title with
its first place finish at the MIAA Championships Saturday morning. In fact,
the title was the 18th straight for the Calvin men's cross country team which
ranks as the second-longest championship streak in MIAA athletic history.
With its perfect score of 15 points on Saturday, Calvin became the first team
in MIAA cross country history to post perfect scores at the conference
championship meet in back-to-back years.
In the history of MIAA men's cross country, five teams have recorded perfect
scores of 15 points at the conference championships. Four of those five teams
have been from Calvin with Calvin achieving the feat in 1993, 2000, 2003 and
2004. Kalamazoo also posted a perfect score of 15 points at the 1930
conference championships.
