CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR OCTOBER 27

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Calvin remains one point behind Hope in the MIAA league standings after
defeating Tri-State 4-0 Wednesday afternoon at the Calvin soccer field.

Sophomore Sarah Weesies [Kalamazoo, Mich.] scored three goals for the Knights,
her second hat trick of the season and third of her collegiate
career.

Sophomore Jill Capel [Hudsonville, Mich.] scored the other goal and
assisted one of Weesies's goals. Capel leads in MIAA in scoring with
47 points. Weesies is second in the scoring race with 37 points. With
her assist today, Capel also brought her season assist total to 14,
matching the single-season record held by Tracy Veurink(1990), Larissa
Onderlinde (2001) and Sarah Weesies (2004).

Also picking up assists today were sophomore Jen Evans [Derry, Penn.]
and freshmen Lindsay Hutchison [Arlington Heights, Ill.] and Kate Otten
[Sheboygan, Wisc.].

Calvin led 1-0 at halftime and finished with a 34-1 shots at goal
advantage.

Calvin goalkeeper junior Linda Heilman [Byron Center, Mich.] had one
save in picking up her fifth shutout victory of the year. Sherry Clark
had 15 saves for Tri-State.

Weesies's first goal came at the 14:32 minute mark in the first half,
assisted by Capel, right in front of the goal box.

Weesies's second goal came at the 50:53 minute mark in the second half,
assisted by Evans. Weesies captialized on the opportunity after the goalie
left her box.

At the 57:36 minute mark, Weesies scored her third goal of the game, a
direct shot into the box. She was assisted by Hutchinson.

Capel scored the fourth goal of the game off of Otten with 15:59 left in
the game with another shot into the box.

"I don't think we were sharp in the first half. We didn't come with
the
level of intensity I expected," said head coach Mark Recker. "It was a
two-half game. The first half was nonchalant, methodical. The second
half was focused, effective, and purposeful."

Tri-State falls to 0-13-1 in the MIAA and 2-11-1 overall. The Knights
remain in second place in the league standings, with a record of 10-2-1
in the MIAA and 10-5-1 overall.

The Knights return to action on Saturday, Oct. 30, at St. Mary's.
