CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR OCTOBER 4, 2004
MEN'S GOLF
Home course advantage proved to be of no advantage for the Calvin men's golf
team on Monday as it slipped to a sixth place team score of 340 strokes, 36
strokes higher than its team score a year ago when the Knights hosted a league
outing at their home course - the Watermark Country Club.
The sixth place team score coupled with Albion's fourth place score of 332
allowed the Britons to move past Calvin and into fourth place in the overall
team standings by five strokes.
Sun-splashed skies were evident for most of Monday's 18-hole round but so
were gusty breezes and temperatures that hovered around 50 degrees,
contributing to higher scores across the board.
Hope was able to fight off the conditions however to post a first place team
score of 314, three strokes better than Olivet and more importantly, seven
strokes better than Tri-State University.
With its first place effort, Hope within two strokes of league-leading
Tri-State in the overall team standings, setting up a dramatic finish for the
MIAA title on Saturday at the eighth and final league outing of the year.
Saturday's outing scheduled to begin at noon will be hosted by Adrian at the
Lenawee Country Club.
Calvin's top scorers on Monday were sophomores Jeff TenBrink (Kalamazoo
Christian HS) and Jake Wolffis (Western Michigan Christian HS) with rounds of
82. Senior Matt Kelly (Western Michigan Christian HS) and junior Nick Bolt
(New Berlin, WI) were next for the Knights with rounds of 88 with senior Mike
Bratt (Lynden, WA) completing Calvin's group with a score of 91.
Senior Justin Spyker of Hope captured medalist honors Monday with a round of
76. Spyker was the MIAA's overall medalist in 2002.
