SPRINGFIELD, OH * Calvin suffered a pair of defeats to nationally-ranked opponents on Friday at the Wittenberg Invitational.
Calvin opened the tournament with a 27-30, 30-27, 30-25, 30-19 loss to seventh-ranked Ohio Northern Friday afternoon and then fell 30-25, 30-26, 30-27 to third-ranked Wittenberg Friday night.
In its loss to Ohio Northern (13-2 overall), Calvin (10-4 overall) took a tight first game by a 30-27 count but then fell by the same score in game two. In the pivotal game three, ONU used a 12-1 run midway through to take a 26-15 lead only to see Calvin charge back to within four at 28-24 but the Polar Bears would score two of the next three points to close out the game. Using that momentum, ONU closed out the match with a 30-19 game four win.
Calvin was led in defeat by sophomore Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA) who tallied a career-high 13 kills while also contributing four digs and five blocks. Sophomore Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) was next with 12 kills while sophomore Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH) had 11 kills and 17 digs. Senior Kara Kuiopers (Unity Christian HS) added nine kills and six blocks while freshman setter Katie Zondervan (Lakewood, CA) had 52 assists.
In its loss to Wittenberg, Calvin battled gamely but could never get over the hump as the Knights suffered narrow defeats in games one, two and three.
Kuipers picked up 13 kills and five blocks in the loss to the Tigers while Vogel had 10 kills and three blocks.
Kalb had eight digs, six kills, three blocks and a pair of service aces while Zondervan tossed out 39 assists.
Calvin is scheduled to face Baldwin-Wallace College at 9:30 a.m. and Case Western Reserve University at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow on the second day of competition at the tournament.
