MEN'S SOCCER
ADRIAN - The nationally-ranked Calvin men's soccer team remained unbeaten
and stretched its win streak to four with a 7-0 conference victory at Adrian
Wednesday afternoon.
Ranked eighth in the latest Division III Top-25 poll, Calvin (7-0-1 overall,
2-0-0 MIAA) led 4-0 at halftime and kept the pressure on in the second half.
Senior Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) continued his torrid scoring streak
with his second hat-trick performance in the last three games. The three-goal
effort by Veldhouse in Wednesday's victory over Adrian (2-3-0 overall, 0-1-0
MIAA) marked his third collegiate hat-trick. Veldhouse now has a team-leading
nine goals and 19 points on the year.
Junior Matt Cosnek (Hopewell, PA) also scored a pair of goals for the Knights
while sophomores Nick Capisciolto (Unity Christian HS) and Dave Holwerda (Grand
Rapids Christian HS) had one goal each.
Freshman Jared Litty (Hudsonville HS) notched a pair of assists while senior
Joel VandeKopple (Grand Rapids Christian HS), juniors Peter Malefyt (Lansing
Christian HS) and Levi Kool (Holland Christian HS) and freshman A.J. Dufendach
(Forest Hills Northern HS) were also credited with one assist.
Calvin held a 25-9 shots at goal advantage while junior goaltender Joe Westra
(Grand Rapids Christian HS) pitched his fifth shutout of the year.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Albion at 1:30 p.m. at
Calvin Field in a key MIAA match. Saturday's match will be broadcast via

VOLLEYBALL
ALMA - Alma's dominance over Calvin continued as the Scots defeated the
Knights for the sixth straight time and for the seventh time in the last nine
meetings Wednesday evening at Alma's Cappaert Gymnasium. More importantly,
Alma handed Calvin its first conference defeat, allowing the Scots to remain
unbeaten overall (16-0) and in the MIAA (4-0) while the Knights (10-2 overall,
6-1 MIAA) saw their 10-match win streak come to an end.
Alma grabbed early leads in all three games and never looked back as Calvin
was forced to play catch-up nearly the entire match.
Alma's gritty defensive play was again a factor as the Scots recorded 69
digs in the three-game win with Caitlin Deis, Kristin Judson and Lindsey Baker
compiling 16 digs apiece for Alma. Judson also had 14 kills for the Scots
while Baker amassed 41 assists.
Senior Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian HS) was the main threat for the Knights
with a match-high 15 kills, seven blocks and a hitting percentage of .353.
Sophomore Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH) added eight kills while junior Katie Schultz
(Escondido, CA) had 21 digs and freshman setter Katie Zondervan (Lakewood, CA)
38 assists.
Calvin will now prepare for a rugged weekend tournament at Wittenberg
University. The Knights will open the tournament on Friday against
nationally-ranked Ohio Northern and follow with a Friday night match against
nationally-ranked Wittenberg.

MEN'S GOLF
KALAMAZOO - A fourth place finish at a league outing hosted by Kalamazoo
allowed the Knights to move into sole possession of fourth place in the MIAA
standings Wednesday afternoon at the Prairies Golf Club. Calvin posted a
fourth place score of 308 strokes, just two strokes behind third place
Tri-State and 11 strokes behind first place Hope in Wednesday's outing.
In addition, Calvin finished 16 strokes ahead of fifth place Albion, allowing
the Knights to take a seven-stroke lead over the Britons in the overall team
standings.
Calvin was led once again by sophomore Jeff TenBrink (Kalamazoo Christian HS)
who fired a round of 73 to finish in a three-way tie for second place
individually. He was followed by senior Matt Kelly (Western Michigan Christian
HS) who carded a round of 77. Senior Mike Bratt (Lynden, WA) as did junior
Nick Bolt (New Berlin, WI) who was inserted into the lineup for the first time
this year and made the move pay off with a sterling performance. Sophomore Tim
VanVugt (Brookfield, WI) rounded out Calvin's finishers with a score of 83.
Tommy Yamaoka of Hope earned medalist honors with a round of 71, helping the
Flying Dutchmen post a team score of 297 strokes. After four league outings,
Tri-State leads the overall standings but its lead is now down to 12 strokes
with Hope in second and Olivet in third, just 19 strokes behind.
The next league outing is scheduled for Saturday with Alma to host at the Pine
River Country Club at 1:00 p.m.

WOMEN'S GOLF
KALAMAZOO - Calvin came up with its finest performance of the season but was
unable to make a move up the standings as the Knights took seventh at the
second MIAA outing of the year with a team score of 368. Wednesday's outing
was hosted by Kalamazoo at the Milham Park Golf Club and was tightly packed
through the middle as Hope took fifth at 362 and Alma sixth at 364, leaving the
Knights within striking distance of fifth and sixth place in the overall team
standings.
Olivet also pulled a bit of a surprise in Wednesday's outing as it posted a
first place team score of 340, three strokes ahead of league-leading St.
Mary's with Tri-State third at 350 and Albion fourth at 352.
St. Mary's continues to lead the overall team standings, 22 strokes ahead of
second place Olivet. Calvin is in seventh place, five strokes behind Hope and
six strokes behind Alma.
Junior Margaret Tassaro (Carnegie, PA) was Calvin's top golfer on Wednesday
as she fired a round of 89. Junior Annie Huizenga (Unity Christian HS) was
next with a 90 while senior Dawn Svenkeson (Scandia, MN) had a 93 and sophomore
Abby Stemler (Elk River, MN) a 96. Sophomore Megan Andrews (Midland) rounded
out Calvin's finishers with a score of 109.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it competes at an MIAA outing hosted
by Tri-State at the Zollner Golf Club.
