CALVIN SPORTS REPORT PART ONE FOR SEPTEMBER 18, 2004

MEN'S SOCCER

ANGOLA, IN * Calvin opened its MIAA campaign on a winning note with a 3-0 victory at Tri-State University Saturday afternoon. Ranked 23rd nationally (NCAA III), the Knights are now 6-0-1 overall.

Saturday's victory was Calvin's fourth shutout win of the year.

Calvin took control of the game with first half goals from seniors Joel VandeKopple (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) with Veldhouse drawing an assist on the VandeKopple score while junior Levi Kool (Holland Christian HS) notched an assist on the Veldhouse tally.

Veldhouse then picked up his second goal of the game in the 71st minute as he was able to blast in a rebound shot to give the Knights a three-goal lead.

With his pair of goals on Saturday, Veldhouse collected the eighth multiple-goal match of his collegiate career. It also closed out a big week for Veldhouse who recorded five goals and an assist in victories over Ohio Northern and Tri-State.

Calvin finished Saturday's contest with a 30-4 shots at goal advantage while junior Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian HS) picked up four saves in posting his fourth shutout victory of the year and the 15th of his collegiate career.

Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Adrian for a 4:00 p.m. conference match.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

OLIVET * Calvin got back on the winning track with a 5-1 victory at Olivet Saturday afternoon, allowing the Knights to move into a temporary tie for first place in the MIAA standings with nine placement points. At 3-1-0 in the MIAA, Calvin is tied with rival Hope (3-0-0 MIAA) in the league standings in terms of placement points. The two rivals will meet on Tuesday at Calvin Field in a game scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.

Sophomore Jill Capel (Unity Christian HS) lit up the scoreboard in Calvin's win over the Comets (2-4-0 overall, 0-2-0 MIAA) Saturday as scored three goals for her second collegiate hat-trick and her sixth collegiate multiple-goal performance. Capel now has a team-leading seven goals on the year and has picked up at least one point in five of Calvin's seven games this fall.

Sophomore Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo Christian HS) also had a big afternoon with a goal and three assists while senior Linnea Butler (Shelton, WA) accounted for Calvin's other goal. Weesies currently has a team-leading five assists with all five coming in MIAA competition.

Calvin (3-4-0 overall) led 4-0 at halftime and took a 5-0 lead in the 58th minutes of the match on Capel's third goal of the game. Olivet scored in the 81st minute as Shannah Fisher converted a feed from Stacy Stickney.

Calvin outshot the host Comets 20-4 with junior goaltender Linda Heilman (South Christian HS) picking up three saves for the Knights in goal.

MEN'S GOLF

ANGOLA, IN * For the second straight time, Calvin took fourth at an MIAA outing as the Knights tied Albion for fourth at a league outing hosted by Tri-State University at the Zollner Golf Course Saturday afternoon.

Calvin and Albion posted team scores of 314 at Saturday's outing with host Tri-State taking first by a decisive 11-stroke margin over second place Olivet (289) with Hope taking third (291).

With its Saturday finish, Calvin remains in fifth place in the overall team standings, nine strokes behind fourth place Albion and 15 strokes ahead of sixth place Alma.

Calvin was led Saturday by sophomore Jeff TenBrink (Kalamazoo Christian HS) who fired a round of 75 that left him tied for 13th place individually. He was followed by seniors Mike Bratt (Lynden, WA) and Matt Kelly (Western Michigan Christian HS) respectively as Bratt had a round of 78 (20th place) and Kelly a round of 79 (21st place). Sophomore Tim VanVugt (Brookfield, WI) added an 82 while senior Derek Vermeulen (Plymouth) had an 87.

Justin Howard of Tri-State was Saturday's medalist with a round of 68.

Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it competes at an MIAA outing hosted by Kalamazoo at the Prairies Golf Club.
