CALVIN RANKS HIGH ON CoSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA LIST

The College Sports Information Director's Association of America (CoSIDA) recently released its list of schools receiving the most CoSIDA Academic All-America awards this past year and over the past five years and Calvin College ranks high on both lists.

The 2003-04 academic year saw six Calvin scholar-athletes honored as CoSIDA Academic All-Americans ®. Named as first team CoSIDA Academic All-Americans were seniors Joel Veldhouse (men's soccer), Tim Avery (men's cross country/track and field) and Hendrik Kok (men's cross country/track and field). Named to the second team was junior Laura Hamilton (women's cross country/track and field) while seniors Jessie Lair (women's cross country coach/track and field) and Matt Edwards (women's cross country/track and field) were third team selections.

Since 2000, Calvin scholar-athletes have received CoSIDA Academic All-America honors 18 times which ranks 16th among collegiate institutions nationwide at any level. With six CoSIDA Academic All-Americans this past year, Calvin posted the sixth-highest total nationwide and the third-highest total of any NCAA III institution.

The Academic All-America Teams program honors 816 male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of America; a 2,000-member organization consisted of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.

The CoSIDA Academic All-America ®) Teams Program is the premier, nationwide college scholar-athlete awards program. The term "Academic All-America" is a registered U.S. trademark for CoSIDA. This service mark grants CoSIDA exclusive rights to the term.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Division I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports

CALVIN MEN'S TENNIS TEAM RECEIVES ITA ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM AWARD

The Calvin men's tennis team has received the All-Academic Team award from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for the 2003-2004 academic year. The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale).

Calvin is one of 28 NCAA III men's tennis teams to receive the honor.

Under the direction of head coach John Ross, the 2004 Calvin men's tennis team posted an overall record of 10-8 in dual match play including 2-3 in the MIAA. Calvin then took third at the MIAA championships with a team score of 54 points to finish in a tie for third place in the final league standings.

Members of the Calvin men's tennis team this past year were senior Mark Betten (Portage/Kalamazoo Christian HS), juniors Jon Miedema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Kevin VanHaitsma (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS), sophomores David Bratt (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Ryan DeNooyer (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) and freshmen Ryan Sneller (Sheboygan, WI/Sheboygan County Christian HS) and Dan Volkema (Spring Lake/Holland Christian HS).

Calvin is one of four MIAA men's tennis team to receive the award as Alma, Hope and Kalamazoo were also so honored.
