First Recipient of MIAA Male Scholar-Athlete Award is Announced

ROYAL OAK -- The first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Albert M.
Deal Male Scholar-Athlete Award has been presented to Calvin College graduate
Tim Avery of Rochester, N.Y.

The award honors Albert Deal who served as commissioner of the MIAA from
1971-81. It recognizes a senior man from an MIAA member college who has
excelled in academics and athletics and displayed outstanding leadership
qualities.

Avery was a four-year member of the Calvin cross country and track and field
teams. During his career, he received All-MIAA honors five times, earning the
award three times in cross country and twice in track and field. As a cross
country athlete, he was on two national champion and two national runnerup
team. This past spring he was the conference track champion in the 5,000 meter
run and finished 12th at the NCAA Division III nationals in the 10,000 meters.

He was selected Calvin's outstanding senior male student-athlete (Bere'
Memorial Award) and was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America first team in
the cross country/track and field division. He earned MIAA Academic Honor Roll
distinction all four years.

He graduated with a major in English and secondary education and a minor in
physical education achieving a 3.81 grade point average.

While a student he served as a Young Life leaders in the Caledonia Public
School system and has been active as a Young Life summer camp leader in
Minnesota. He was also taught mini-courses in Calvin's 2003 Youth Festival of
Faith and Writing and was a member of the college's "Writer's Guild". He served
on Calvin's Student Athletic Advisory Council for three years.

He is the son of Ken and Corrine Avery of Rochester, N.Y. He is a graduate of
Gates-Chili High School.

The other nominees were: Marc Flancbaum of Albion (baseball), Edward Huebner
of Hope (soccer), Andrew Kemple of Kalamazoo (soccer) and Drew Graham of Olivet
