Calvin 23rd in Final NACDA Director's Cup Standings
The streak is alive at Calvin College.
For the ninth consecutive year, Calvin has posted a top-25 finish in the final
NCAA III NACDA Director's Cup standings. In the final 2003-2004 standings,
Calvin has finished 23rd with 382.5 points.
Calvin is one of only nine schools to finish in the top-25 every year that the
competition has been held at the NCAA III level.
Joining Calvin in the group are Williams (MA), College of New Jersey, Amherst
(MA), Middlebury (VT), Ithaca (NY), Wisconsin-LaCrosse, SUNY-Cortland and Emory
(Ga.).
The NACDA Director's Cup is based on points earned by teams that compete in
NCAA Championship events and is presented annually by the National Association
of Collegiate Director's of Athletics (NACDA) to the best overall collegiate
athletics program in the country. The NACDA Director's Cup race is held at the
NCAA I, II and III levels and also for NAIA institutions.
Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA III Championship
competition in up to 18 sports -- nine for men and nine for women. Each
national champion receives 100 points with a national runner-up finish worth 90
points. Third place is worth 80 points and fourth place finishes count for 75
points with a sliding point scale continuing on down by order of finish.
Williams of Massachusetts, captured the Director's Cup for the eighth straight
year, finishing with a commanding first place total of 1,081.75 points while
Emory University placed second with 811 points.
The final standings include the spring sports of baseball, men's golf, men's
and women's tennis, softball, and men's and women's outdoor track and field.
Heading into the spring sports season, Calvin stood in 32nd place in the NACDA
Director's Cup Standings raising the possibility that its streak of top-25
might come to an end.
Calvin rallied during the spring sports season however as its track and field
teams added 130.5 points to its final point total. The women's track and field
team earned 90.0 points with a second place finish at the NCAA III
Championships while the men's track and field team recorded 40.5 points with a
32nd place finish at the national meet.
During the fall the Calvin men's cross country team earned its second-ever
national title, earning Calvin 100 points. The Calvin women's cross country
team finished 15th at the recent NCAA III Championships to earn 43.5 points.
Calvin then scored in men's basketball and in men's and women's swimming and
diving during the winter sports season.
The Calvin men's basketball team picked up 25 points with its berth in the
NCAA III Tournament. The women's swimming and diving team took 24th at the
NCAA III Championships to earn 50 points while the Calvin men's swimming and
diving team took 40th to earn 33.5 points.
Last year, Calvin finished 22nd in the final NACDA Director's Cup standings
with 403.75 points.
This is the ninth year for the NACDA Director's Cup chase at the NCAA III
level. Calvin finished 11th during the 2001-2002 season with 490 points; 9th
during the 2000-2001 season with 474 points; 6th during the 1999-2000 season
