CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SATURDAY, MAY 1 (Part One)

BASEBALL

Calvin and Adrian continued their strong pitching from Friday's game into
the first game of the double header on Saturday. The Knights were on the short
end of a 1-0 score this time as Adrian took the first game. Adrian finally got
their offense going in game two, winning by a score of 5-1 to sweep the twin
bill.

In game one, Calvin received an outstanding performance from starting pitcher
Andy Draayer (Denver, CO). Draayer pitched all seven innings, allowing only
the one run on four hits. Despite being so effective on the mound, Draayer
picked up the loss to drop his record to 2-4 on the year. The lone run came in
the third inning when Adrian's Chris Pappas belted a solo homerun to left
field.. In the sixth inning, Draayer got out of a bases loaded situation with
nobody out. Draayer induced a ground ball to get a double play home to first,
and then got the last batter to fly out to left to get out of the inning.

The Knights had several chances to score offensively but were unable to
capitalize. In the second, Calvin loaded the bases with only one out, but
center fielder Terry O'Neal (Muskegon/Reeths Puffer) grounded into a
double-play to end the inning. In the fifth, Calvin advanced first baseman
Mark Tigchelaar (GR Christian) to third with two outs after his leadoff single,
but Aaron Griffith flew out to center field to end the inning. In Calvin's
last at bat, Kyle Fletcher (Fort Wayne, IN) led off with a single. Once again
Calvin was able to advance the runner to third with two outs, but Adrian
starter Craig Reynolds struck out left fielder Mike Aggen (Evergreen, IL) to
end the game. Reynolds improved to 6-1 on the season with the complete game
shutout.

Highlighting the box score for Calvin was Darrell Heuker (Unity Christian),
who was 2-3. Also collecting single hits for the Knights was second baseman
Tyler VanEps (Denver, CO), Fletcher and Tigchelaar.

Game two started off slowly for the Knights as Calvin starting pitcher Ross
Dykstra (Holland Christian) was unable to get out of the second inning, giving
up two runs while battling inconsistency. Dykstra had been fighting off a cold
and fever for the past week and was being watched carefully by the coaching
staff. Brian VandeStreek (Unity Christian) relieved Dykstra and went four
innings, allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out one. Jory Trim
(Creston) came in during the sixth inning and finished the game without
allowing a hit while striking out one. Dykstra picked up the loss to fall to
3-3 on the year.

Josh Vriesman (Denver, Co) and Tigchelaar collected two hits for the Knights
while O'Neal, Heuker, Aggen, and right fielder Aaron Griffith (Manhatten, KS)
all picked up one hit apiece. Griffith's single in the third inning scored
Tigchelaar with the Knights only run of the game. Adrian starter Bobby Wrozek
gave Adrian their third strong pitching performance of the three game series
and picked up the win to improve to 6-2 on the season. The series featured
five complete games pitched between the two teams.

Adrian remained in second place in the MIAA with a record of 11-4 because
Albion's doubleheader against Olivet was rained out on Saturday. Calvin
remains in sixth place in the MIAA with a record of 5-10 and 13-23 overall.
