CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FRIDAY, APRIL 23, 2004

WOMEN'S TENNIS

ALBION * After one day of competition at the MIAA Women's Tennis Championships, Calvin rests in a tie for fourth place along with Kalamazoo with 8.5 points while host Albion has the lead with 12.5 points, a half-point ahead of second place St. Mary's. Hope is in third place with nine points.

Calvin, Albion and St. Mary's tied for first place in the MIAA dual match standings with 6-1 league records. Host Albion appears to have the upper hand for the final league title however as the Britons advanced singles players into Saturday's championship finals in four of six singles flights while winning all three of their first round doubles matches (Flights 1-through-3).

Calvin advanced two singles players into Saturday's finals with the possibility of advancing one more while also winning one first round doubles match.

Slated to play in championship finals for Calvin on Saturday are freshman Kari Lipinski (Fort Wayne, IN) at No. 5 singles and sophomore Kim Bosscher (Calvin Christian HS) at No. 6 singles. Freshman Allyson Logan (Fort Wayne, IN) is also alive at No. 4 singles but did not complete her semifinal match on Friday.

In doubles action, sophomore Annie Huizenga (Unity Christian HS) and Logan won their first round match at No. 2 doubles. Scheduled to play for third place on Saturday in singles action are Huizenga at No. 3 singles and junior Rachel Pater (South Christian HS) at No. 2 singles.

MEN'S TENNIS

KALAMAZOO * Calvin sits in fourth place after one day of competition at the MIAA Men's Tennis Championships at Kalamazoo College. The Knights have 11.5 points while Albion is third (14.5 points), Hope second (15.0 points) and Kalamazoo first (18 points).

Calvin sophomore Ryan DeNooyer (Kalamazoo Christian HS) was the only Knight to advance to a singles final on Saturday as he did so with a semifinal win on Friday at No. 6 singles. DeNooyer will face Luke Marker of Kalamazoo in Saturday's final.

Calvin's remaining five singles players will compete in third place matches on Saturday as junior Kevin VanHaitsma (Unity Christian HS) will play at No. 1 singles, junior Jon Miedema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) at No. 2 singles, freshman Dan Volkema (Holland Christian HS) at No. 3 singles, junior Mark Betten (Kalamazoo Christian HS) at No. 4 singles and sophomore Dave Bratt (Grand Rapids Christian HS) at No. 5 singles.

In four of five third place matches, Calvin will face off against an Albion opponent.

Calvin did not advance any of its doubles teams into Saturday's finals but has a chance to send all three of its teams into Saturday's third place matches.

BASEBALL

ALMA * 14 hits were not enough to enable Calvin to gain another conference victory as the Knights suffered a 6-3 defeat at Alma College Friday afternoon in the opener of a three-game conference series.

Calvin stranded 13 runners on the afternoon while also committing three errors that led to a pair of unearned runs. Calvin junior Jim Deters (Kalamazoo Christian HS) took the loss to fall to 3-3 on the year.

Alma (11-15 overall, 5-5 MIAA) broke a 3-3 deadlock with a run in the bottom of the fourth and added two more in the sixth to pull away for the win.

Sophomore Mike Aggen (Evergreen Park, IL) collected four hits in five trips to the plate for the Knights while sophomore Kyle Hollemans (East Kentwood HS) was 3-for-5. Sophomore Tyler VanEps (Denver, CO) was 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles while senior Aaron Griffith (Manhattan, KS) was 2-for-5 with a double.

Alma finished with nine hits on the afternoon. Deters went eight innings for the Knights, striking out eight batters and walking three.

Calvin (11-19 overall, 3-7 MIAA) will conclude its series at Alma on Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m..
