CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 20, 2004
BASEBALL
Calvin extended its win streak to four games with a doubleheader sweep over non-conference opponent Siena Heights Tuesday afternoon at Calvin Field, winning by scores of 4-0 and 4-1. The four-game win streak is Calvin's longest win streak of the season.
Calvin (11-17 overall) received strong pitching performances in both games as sophomore Andy Draayer (Denver, CO) tossed his first collegiate complete game shutout in game one with freshman Brian Vande Streek (Unity Christian HS) and sophomore Jim Deters (Kalamazoo Christian HS) combining on the win in game two.
The victory by Draayer (1-3) was the first of his collegiate career as he struck out two batters without a walk while scattering three hits. Calvin collected 11 hits off of Siena Heights starter Ryan Swierlik (0-6), scoring a run in the bottom of the first, two in the fifth and one more in the sixth to give Draayer enough offensive support. Sophomore Mike Aggen (Evergreen Park, IL) and junior Josh Vriesman (Denver, CO) picked up three hits apiece in the opener with Vriesman driving in Calvin's first run on a two-out RBI single in the first inning.
Senior Darrell Heuker (Unity Christian HS) added an RBI single in the fifth and Aggen an RBI single in the sixth. Sophomore Kyle Hollemans (East Kentwood HS) also went 2-for-3 at the plate.
In game two, Vande Streek (2-0) went the first six innings to pick up the win as he scattered three hits, struck out three and walked just one. Deters then came on in the seventh to gain his first save of the year with a shutout inning of relief. Calvin took control with three runs in the bottom of the first as Heuker ripped an RBI single and freshman Kyle Fletcher (Fort Wayne, IN) blasted a two-run RBI double.
Calvin added an insurance run in the fifth as sophomore Mark Tigchelaar (Grand Rapids Christian HS) led off with a triple and scored on an infield error.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Spring Arbor for a non-conference game slated to start at 4:00 p.m.
SOFTBALL
SAGINAW - To play make-up games from March 17, Calvin (16-11) finally made the trip to visit the Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals (22-18-1) where the Knights were swept in a non-conference doubleheader 3-2 and 7-4. The Knights had not been swept in a doubleheader all season and had not lost consecutive games since opening the season 0-6. Saginaw Valley spent last week standing at eighth in the Great Lakes Region of the NCAA Division II rankings.
Game one of the two-game series went down to the wire when SVSU scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning off a Tabitha Greenwood walk-off home run. The Knights had taken a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth inning when junior Abby Konyndyk (Grand Rapids Christian) doubled to right field to bring in senior Rachel Dyksterhouse (Kalamazoo Christian), but relinquished it with just one out in the bottom of the inning. Konyndyk had the only two-hit performance for the Knights in the defeat, while she and Dyksterhouse each batted a run in.
Freshman Ruth Anna Spooner (Idaho School for the Deaf) took the loss for the Knights, going to 5-4 on the season. Spooner pitched all seven and one-third innings, giving up eight hits while walking two and striking out four.
Game two had potential for some fireworks when the Knights scored four runs in the seventh inning after trailing 7-0, but the rally was quickly halted. Saginaw Valley scored in four of the six innings they went to the plate, including four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Angie Sietsema (Grandville) and sophomore Laurel Sands (Rockford) each collected two of Calvin's seven total hits. Both of the hits for Sands were of the extra-base variety as she connected on a double in the fifth inning and on a two-run homer in Calvin's seventh-inning rally.
Junior Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont) was handed the loss for Calvin to put her at 5-4 on the season. Heyboer pitched four innings, giving up three hits and two runs (one earned), while walking three and striking one out. Junior Kara Van Kooten (Grace Christian School) relieved Heyboer for the final two innings, giving up three hits and five runs (one earned), while walking two and striking out one.
Neither team committed an error in the first game, but Calvin got sloppy in game two with six errors to Saginaw Valley's zero.
Calvin returns to action this Thursday at Calvin Field when they play host to cross-town rival Hope College in an MIAA double-header with great league implications. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.. The doubleheader will be broadcast via RealAudio on the Calvin web site with Ross Weener and Jeff Febus calling all of the action.
