CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 8, 2004
SOFTBALL
ALMA * Calvin traveled to nationally ranked Alma for a doubleheader on Thursday, earning a split with the Scots. Calvin won the first game 4-1, while the Scots battled back in the second game and won 3-0. The split keeps Calvin within half a game of league-leading Alma and puts Calvin in sole possession of second place.
In game one, Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont) pitched exceptionally while completing all seven innings for the victory. Heyboer did not allow an earned run and gave up only six hits, improving her record to 3-3.
Calvin took the early lead on a RBI groundout by Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH) in the top of the fourth inning. Alma answered right back in their half of the fourth on a single by Colleen Trybus. Calvin would rally in the seventh, scoring three runs to beat one of the best teams in the country. An error by the Scots allowed Calvin's first run to score. Next, Jeanne Cole (Fountain/Mason County Eastern) doubled, which brought home Heyboer. Lisa Bareman's (Unity Christian) fielder's choice allowed Cole to score.
Game two did not prove to be as dramatic. Alma starter Melissa Tavidian dominated for all seven innings, allowing only three hits. Tavidian improved her record to 10-1 for the season. Ruth Anna Spooner (Twin Falls, ID) started and went into the sixth inning for Calvin, allowing the three runs on seven hits. Spooner picked up the tough loss, falling to 5-2 on the season. Kara Van Kooten (Anchorage, AK) finished up the game for Calvin without allowing a run. Jeanne Cole, Keri Cole (Fountain/Mason County Eastern) and Angie Sietsema (Grandville) collected one hit apiece for Calvin.
Calvin's next game is on Monday, April 12, against Aquinas at home starting at 3:30.
